Been done canola for a few days now. Just prepping the last field for barley. An old pasture that needs some rock digging, holes filled, trees pushed back. By the looks of the forecast if we don't get it sown by Monday afternoon we might be waiting until Friday next week to get it done. What would you sooner do, seed before the rain into dry sod or after into wet? Supposed to get over an inch and then showery for the next ten days.

Finally got going on the 11th. Soys and 90% of corn in. Have to wait for low loam field to dry. Would have been in good shape Monday but I'll take the rain we're getting today. Perfect for what's planted.

Make sure you get all the seeds covered up and it should be good.

Seed before the rain. Works better to seed into dry soil.

Got moved back home with the drill tonight. Only got 200 acres of feed/silage barley to seed and 40 acres of corn. Might wait till after the rain for the corn.
Everything is coming up nice and looking good. First canola you can row it from the road driving by.

Have most growers above the 49th gone full tilt with canola this season? Or sticking to the same rotation area?
The weather “forecasters” in OZ have predicted in a range of “drier than normal” to those focused on the dramatic city centric tree bugger/anti coal/anti fuel …. anti everything that’s provided their basics of living for the last 100 years ……. “Super El Niño” …….. claim! El Niño in this southern part of the blue planet usually means lower than normal rainfall ….. but not always. Time will tell with any forecast ……. We’ve had some wetter than normal seasons of late ……. so maybe it’s our turn to have some dry ones.

In my province of Manitoba, canola is almost as profitable to “grow to fail” it. What I mean is , Huge crop insurance levels May mean more returns from a disaster crop compared to getting an average crop at 14 dollars a bushel come fall. Our crop insurance made a mistake in predicting price and valued the commodity at 19.67 I believe off hand! I am sure that was a decision factor to minimize risk . To give an example my canola insurance is sitting above 700 an acre coverage . . A farmer would need 50 bushels an acre at 14 bucks to match a no crop scenario . Crazy to think that way! Only crop that limits canola acres from hitting record acres is hard red spring wheat is still 10 bucks a bushel new crop. It’s only ten bucks if you sign for it!!! I would put our soil moisture level at near normal .

I have a feeling canola acres will be in line with most years average. I know ours is up just a little bit, but only because that’s how our rotation worked out. I believe most people follow their rotation with a few acres set aside for changes in markets or weather. I don’t believe many people plan their crop based on what crop insurance is paying. I don’t even look at crop insurance when planing the years crop.
Doesn’t matter much what people’s intentions are, until it’s in the bin nothing is for sure.
Finished up all the cereals today, only canola left, on the fence as to when to sow it, just doesn’t want to warm up. Today was only 13 with a cool wind, need a coat on every day by supper time. Think the smoke must be causing it to stay cool. I know it’ll germinate but don’t want it to poke out of the ground then just stand still for two weeks while the flea beetles feast on it. Brother said he could see the rows in the wheat from the road, I haven’t been past it for a couple days.
Why does the last 10 acres take longer sometimes than a full quarter to do?

Makes less work to clean it anyway. Wash the dust off the tank anyway

You can tell which outfits get going in the morning while it's still a bit dewy. There's some out there that stay clean all spring, ha.

Things are going to jump now. Got a good half inch out of some thunderstorms last night. A couple close strikes with the house shaking kind of thunder should have released a bit of nitrogen.

Maybe they’re just people like me that spend the morning going in circles because they don’t know what they should be doing next? I call it organizing. Or confusion. Hard to tell, they seem a lot alike.
