That's when they used to seed by hand walking the whole field, cptusa. lol But yeah, when the implement about covers the tractor tracks, it takes a while to cover acres. You could always put it in road gear It's fun to watch the acres/hour read out on the tractor when driving down the road.

Dad was talking about how much machinery has changed, he said he remembered seeding with his dad’s 26 run, 13 foot drill, and that would be about the same size as the outside wing on our drill now.
Our wheat looks to be all coming up, oats are just poking out and barley should be up in a day or two. Canola is doing fine sitting in the bags. Maybe start tomorrow, see how windy it is, lots of fun trying to put it in the air tank on a windy day.

Showers went all around us today. Forecast showed 80% chance of 15 mm last night for today so ran quite late to finish qtr we were on but only got about 10 drops and a wicked wind. Figures. If had left it part done would have rained for sure haha. Gonna need some moisture soon though. We have been working on canola and is all laying in the dust. Some fields are getting hard like concrete also. Have 2 inch openers on drill and really wish they were 3/4 inch this spring. The two inch ones do not like hard ground which usually isn’t an issue here.

At where I want to be right now. Finished putting in flax last night. May 23 seed date is good in my mind for flax. Not much for broad leaved weeds growing. All those bright sunny says of late April/early May are replaced with haze/smoke/cloud cover so grassy weeds doing fine with low sunshine but broadleaves looking for more heat and sun to get going. Even the kochia isn't doing much for growth, stuff around the bins is slow growing.
Have to spray ahead of the mustard then get that seeded. About 5 days work left if all goes well. On and off showers forecast for a few days so hard to say what happens. Good moisture here in most places because things just are not drying up. No rain for 2 weeks but also not much drying. Good for getting the crop going and then we wait to see how things change in June and July.

It was fun and so interesting hearing how it used to be done . My favourite stories were at harvest and how they shovelled grain off a truck with no hoist into an old scoop auger and than shovelled the grain into the corners of the wooden grain bin. They never complained or quit!!! That the way it was!!! Can you imagine today’s work force subject to that kind of work ! Enjoy your times with dad Kevlar !

I don’t take a single minute for granted with my parents, both in the mid 70’s. One thing about having young children and aging parents, it teaches a guy to have patience. It’s hard to see someone get older and not be able to do the things they used to, the mind is willing but the body isn’t. Mom had an uncle, I just loved that guys outlook on life, I don’t think he ever knew how old he was, he wanted to do something , he just did it. Was in his 80’s and still had a snowmobile and cut wood. Being single his entire life maybe had a part in it 🤷♂️😂. I laughed one time when one of his brothers or sisters died, I can’t remember who it was, but when he heard they had died, he said “ oh well, they’re not missing anything anyways” 😂. He also filed his income tax one year, and on the line for amount owing wrote “same as last year “😂😂.

Ken mentioned global over supply of grain and that has me bewildered also! I think we are so hand to mouth feed now , the long term grain supply is not considered until shit hits the fan like two years ago . If supply was managed like a business it would be an awful lot more boring market . Maybe we need incompetent analysts supplying fake news to drive short term market money making schemes. This year I seeded over half my farm to oats . My local elevator said oat sales are non existent now. It will be interesting the confirmed acreage when it comes oat. Is that more fake news!!!!? I guess I am zig instead of zag . No wheat lots of oats! Oat market is classic case of hand to mouth! Let’s see if the hand has something to offer the mouth come fall!!
Flax might be another market like that.
I don’t like to wish for rain . I remember in 2019 my crop looked bumper in late June and than 8 inches fell and ruined my crop . It was bone dry till that rain event. I was happy for the first 2 and than my tears fell after each additional inch.

Not many oat acres in this area. Lots of guys are sitting on half or more of their oats from last harvest still. Gluten free contracts cancelled didn’t help that.

Its amazing to hear the shift to BEARISH news each morning! All I hear from annalyist is the big crops and reduced demand. How do we know if they are receiving correct info. Who is paying their salary. What skin do they have on the line if they are mistaken!
Doesnt take long for weather problems to turn on a dime! We are currently locked in plus 30 c with 60 k winds. Usually wheat yields are established early on in plant life so if we get major stresses now..... look out!
What ever became of those gluten free oat contracts. Did farmers get screwed out of 8 bucks a bushel. shame on the contractor oat company!

Yes they did get screwed out of the gluten free contracts. Lots of them were priced close to $9. If they would have cancelled earlier could have got close to $7. Or in the fall $4.50. Now talking to those guys if it gets up to $4 they are dumping them all

I remember hearing that company was going to help honour the contracts overa long period of time, but I guess it appears not.

Old crop isn't there, demand still strong according to basis. Crop looks good but we're dry with no rain in site. I wouldn't be too afraid to go long on this market.
