Calibrated the drill yesterday and have it pointed in the right direction. Hope to get going tonight after work and get depth set and maybe to a tank or so if all goes well. Moisture is good. going to throw some of those "beer seeds" in first as the land I have set for wheat is still too wet. Took FEL out and pushed the last snowbanks around frim the piles I made this winter to get rid of them. couple were still 3 feet high. mind you they were covered with dirt as I skimmed the top a bit back in November when the ground wasn't completely frozen and the skid shoes drove in a bit.

Been raining for about 3 hours so far so nothing to do today or tomorrow. 1/2" I would guess based on lots of big puddles in yard. Everything was working ok yesterday so not much to do with the free time. Still pretty sloppy in some places yesterday, those spots where you drive over stubble and tires are wet with moisture but no earth sticks. Ok for cultivator with spoons putting on granular but wouldn't be seeding yesterday.

It’s amazing how different areas and soil makes a difference. Most years we wouldn’t be seeding if the tires weren’t wet. We are happy when it’s not sticking.

Had an electrical problem that stumped me for two hours this morning. I tell you the days of switching tractors every few years is done for awhile because transferring all the wires over can lead to some time wasting electrical problems. Thank god I found this loose wire and was able to get some oats in today. Big thunderstorm north of Rosenort dumped some hail in Winnipeg and came pretty close to where I was seeding. You guys ever have that bad Idea to try and make one more round before a big storm!! My helper persuaded me to shut it down at 9pm when a few rain drops started. A long winter made me forget how fast a thunder boomer can form! Will see what happens tomorrow! Once I figured out the electrical problem , seeding went in very nicely! One small problem is the flood from last year piled up the silt on some of my fields and that stuff just does not dry out! I almost got stuck in one small patch of that stuff. Its dry on top but slushy wet underneath.

You guys ever assume that a machine is field ready - but it's not?? Been busy keeping the fertilizer and seed to the drill, keeping the cows fed, moving everything whenever the drill changes fields, and all the other gofer stuff - the whole while thinking the sprayer is ready to go. Well it wasn't. Switched to little blue seeds today and decided to do a trial of a couple new Truflex with one we've used the last couple years. Took til noonish. Then I arranged fertilizer delivery for the day so I could get some spraying done. Checked hub oil, one needed a top up, no 85w140. Went to town, all they had was synthetic, $$$. Decided to change the oil in all four hubs. Take the sprayer to the fill area, flush the booms and check nozzles - about a dozen needed cleaning. Go get the chem pump out of heated storage, doesn't work. It's a Soterra and all the pump gears are seized. Too late to go get a new one so spent around 3 hrs cleaning it up and picking the gunk out of the gears. Looking like there's maybe a leak in one of the diaphrams. Believe it or not I got it working in time to mix a batch just as it got dark. Tomorrow I'll try to squeeze in a few tank fulls. In all reality it should only take a couple days for me to catch up. I just hate seeing those weeds stealing what little moisture we have this spring.

Nope, nothing is ever ready if you do it in fall Gary. Had the same fun with the sprayer today. Spent a lot of time in fall going through it just because we had such a nice fall. I honestly thought that throw the batteries in and turn the key. Yeah right. All a bunch of small things, but it adds up time wise, what I don't get is my pump seal is now leaking. It was fine last year, didn't run it dry, maybe the oring against the spring to the ceramic seal failed? Gonna have to wait for a bit now. No seals in stock for a few days.

I always laugh when a dealer says its field ready! Field ready means different to different people. Those chem handlers can be a pain coming out of storage. Lots of work to undo fittings till you reach the one you think is leaking! That work for me is coming soon.

Dodged most of the storms here last night. Had a few drops on a patch that formed right on top of town but didn't even register in my rain gauge.
Haven't done anything yet. There's a running joke around here that when you see Seed-Ex start seeding, wait a week and everyone else will go... They started last Friday so maybe we will have something ready tomorrow. Hahaha
I'm positive even without any precipitation the ground is wetter every morning than it was the day before. Frost is still coming up it seems.
Hopefully not too much rain this weekend and we can start making dust fly next week.

Yes, seems layer of frost still holding moisture up in the soil here in places. Was at the elevator yesterday picking up some stuff and no one seeding yet is the report, no doubt bigger operations are going somewhere. Some rain forecast for late this afternoon and into tomorrow then sunny warm days.
Lots of kochia showing now, 1/2" to 1" tall around the yard means spring is here.

Stuck in last female seed today, seed agronomist didn't want me to start it because he didn't think I could get it done before the rain. Well, the rain snuck up sooner then expected, had to use the get it done gear to make it.

Wrapped up the cereals today, pretty uneventful time getting them in. Surprised how good of a job the drill could do with so much moisture right under the surface. These warm days with that moist ground should get the crop up in a hurry, neighbor had wheat out of the ground within 4 days.
Probably spend most of Monday servicing and finalizing things on the planter before we get going with soybeans next week.

Finished getting the wheat in this morning, got switched over to oats, should finish them tomorrow then on to barley, those are my plans but of course that might not be how it plays out. lol. It’s been a strange spring, going through every low spot so far, but the soil is almost saturated, an inch of rain and things could get ugly. Ground still feels cool so not sure how long it will take things to germinate, at least today was warm and sounds good for the week. Mind you the other day they were saying it was supposed to be 22 degrees out, but when I was out filling the drill and checking things over, I could have chiseled my name in rock with my nipples 😬

five days of oat seeding done! ahhhh! sore eyes and itchy legs are in the rear view mirror. I know it is may 15 but, it still feels early to be seeding canola. Temperatures feels right and the ground is ideal for planting so I will give it a whirl. Hope to get the beans in by this weekend also. will see. Soybeans have proven time and time again that late seeding does not take yield off the table.
Last year at this time I had 20 feet of water on top of my river lot where it dips down on a plateau towards the red river. Today I seeded that same area with 2 % slippage on my 9520r wheel tractor. The Red river is still really high though. It is at the top of its banks. If we get one 3 or 4 inch rain we will have no crop because the river cannot accept water from the watershed. That is what happen in 1997 flood year. We got the crop in and than came a 7 inch rain in July. crop was drowned out just like that.
Nice germination Gary! Is that barley.
