Went to get chicken feed today, canola is showing up at my co-op. Maybe make some phone calls. Busy as hell there too, apparently I am not the only one who pays attention to the forecast.... What's a bag of chicken feed worth out there now? Last bag I got was $20. Today at Masterfeeds in Brandon 17% layer diet 25kg is $21.83 2 weeks ago masterfeed 17% layer diet at Total Farm Supply 25kg was $20 New Rosedale 17% layer diet 20kg at Total was $13.50 Yesterday Minnagro 15% layer diet 25kg was $21.10

Minnagro is my go to place. We get quite a bit of our farm parts and supplies there. Have maybe crossed paths there a time or two?

Don't think so, only been there about 3 times, but looking around yesterday I will probably be back. Looks like Total Farm is still my go to until I get a crusher going!

Chicken economix: Buy old shitty rotten 10x12 granary $400 Try to load said granary on old hay rack with jackalls and railroad ties, fail, pay guy with Cat loader with 10' forks to load it $40. Remove old shot shingles replace rotten boards, put tin on roof, $400. Put steel siding on $800. Insulate inside $1000. Sheet inside with plywood, 1/2" treated on the floor, 3/8 spruce on walls and ceiling, plus a few 2x4's here and there $800. Electrical: NMWU direct burial, 1/2" PVC conduit and fittings, explosion proof light fixture with cage, 4' LED shop light, electronic timer, heat lamp, $300. Heated drinker $60 Hanging feeders x2 $35 Angle iron for roosts $50 Dog dishes for grit, oyster shell, and green veggie treats $25. Various bags of feed to see what they like best $75 Dust bath pan and bag of dust bath concoction $20 Oyster shell equivalent (can't get real oyster shell now I am told, this is better) $10 Wood shavings for bedding (it's better you know, than the wheat straw we baled) $25 Door hardware $20 9 hens 1 rooster $180 Grand total $4240 When is our expected payback? HAHAHA, not in my lifetime, this is a 'just because we want to' farm exercise we still have to build an outside run this spring. The dog has never seen a chicken before, had one in its mouth, but no injuries resulted, SO FAR. This will be a dog training challenge of Cesar Milan magnitude. Get some chickens she said, simple and easy, she said... Oops forgot ceramic eggs $25 Chicken toys $20 and counting (ever see a chicken xylophone? I have now)

Sounds like your “farm fresh eggs “ are as expensive as mine! $5.50 a dozen? Nope, that’s per egg!

Damn, blue eggs are for the dogs 🙄. The wife has been after me to charge more for eggs. I figure 3 bucks a dozen and no washing is fair in my books. You want me to wash them, 20 bucks per dozen, it's expensive to keep my hands silky soft.

Ha, no! Got 15 replacement hens this spring to add with my 15 or so older ones. Raccoon got in and of course killed 10 of the new ones but only one of the old ones. Cat killed one when it was a chick and one just died. And the three that survived, of course they were roosters! lol So basically I just have some pets that lay the odd egg.

His eggs look pretty clean, for some reason my hens feel compelled to shit on them after they lay them.

My wife has been after me to get chickens so I showed her this post. She had a good laugh. Hopefully I won't hear about it for awhile. Thanks OD.

I give kudos to those who keep birds rabbits goats or sheep. Cows and horses can take care of themselves but those other critters need a lot more care and protection. You’d think goats are tough and eat everything. Wrong! Most fussiest species of ruminant I swear and they drop like flies if they get sick and their immune system is such that it inhibits the efficacy of antibiotics. Them and donkeys belong in a dessert not in northern latitudes.

I really wonder about the evolution of fainting goats, would have thought it might have ended with the first one?
