Kept thinking of this last night and don't know a good answer other being vigilant and prepared.
Reminded me of another couple incidents I've had over the last few years. Probably been 5 years ago on another extremely foggy night I went outside about midnight to shut down my grain dryer as it was going to run out of corn. Walked out my basement steps and smelled cigarette smoke, went back in and grabbed glock and back out to scan perimeter. Couldn't see 15' it seemed. Well I can't find anything and determine I'm paranoid, shut down dryer and scan around the place again to ease my mind. Go to walk in basement and door is open about 2', no we are next level. I quietly shut and locked door and cleared every room in my house, which is pretty tense when your family is in there sleeping, and found nothing so I figure maybe I didn't get door closed and call it a night. Next morning neighbor calls me and asks if anything weird happened last night because when he came downstairs in his house in the morning all the lights were on and the front door wide open.
Problem with cops is they may be on call but 20 minutes away, and they need to patrol not sit side by side in their cruisers and bullshit all night.

As much as I hate people who steal, at the end of the day it is just STUFF! Are you willing to risk your life, or you're farm for that? These fine upstanding citizens dont think twice about shooting at cops, so they wont hesitate about shooting at a farmer.

I think it’s the other way around. The thieves are risking their life for your stuff

We need to have two kinds of signs, one for guys like you and those that liked your post, and those like me and that liked my post....you need something along the lines of "Hey crackhead, I got lots of shit I don't care about, come on in and I'll even help you load it!!!" See then all of us would be happy, even the crackheads lol Moral of the story is those who actually did without and busted their ass are not so quick and easy to just let someone walk away with the results of that work and effort, for those where is was easy come easy go, often a different story

My theory is if someone enters your property with ill intent they shouldn’t have the right to walk back off of your property. If people knew that they had zero rights left once they committed a crime, and the right to life being one of them, it would definitely deter most people from stealing . Not saying I would kill people stealing from me, but they might have to crawl back home dragging two broken legs.

Like I said,I hate people who steal,if they threatened family members, or even roughed up my dog, then it's a different story! Still, you better be prepared if you are going to pull the trigger!

I can't imagine having to live with the fact that I had killed someone and could it be done differently??? If you want to get tough with someone try the idiots in government who don't enforce the laws on the books already, they enable all this never-ending crime. I agree criminals shouldn't have rights after they are properly convicted, and the punishment needs to be harsh enough to stop the repeat offenses. I think we all agree that when people's lives are threatened it becomes different. I pray I never have to make that decision...

I think people’s opinion on this is moulded by how much the area they live in is affected by robbery. My area for a couple years had almost daily stealing and there were pictures of many of these people having firearms. When this is going on on your doorstep, it changes you. I’m a non-violent person but ended up putting my rifle beside the bed just in case. It’s easy to say they are only stealing “stuff “ but these people value your stuff more than your life, so why should you value their life more than your own stuff and the safety of your family and neighbors?

Everyone is welcome to their opinions, no worries, nor take anything personally either, I am speaking in broad sense about matters, and with that said, you are saying that no property is worth killing someone over, so that translates into, you believe the criminal should have the right to take whatever from a property owner with no initial recourse, K, thats actually a very common belief among a lot of people. But then you go on to say that people like me who don't agree, should channel our efforts into changing the laws and positions of government regarding the same said issues and criminals....only problem is Swman, its folks with the same beliefs as you who elected the gov officials in the first place who put criminals rights over those of property owners....see to look at it another way, interpreting what I have said clearly shows I support Gerald Stanley, your comments seem to indicate you think Colton Boushie's rights got violated because he got blown away for theft and more...the reality of it all is, rural theft is the issue it is simply because of what modern society dictates, how dare a property owner defend their property. And thats why we have no rights to protect out property same as for example how the Captain can a mere few hundred miles south of us across a border.

Cause and effect, or more of the insane world running the sane world.
It all comes back to law and order being the main deterrent. But that has largely failed, as I think all would agree. So what is the natural evolution when law and order fails - either you say crime is ok or you say it is up to others to exercise the law and order. It really splits into these two avenues, I don't think there are many alternatives other than saying law and order failed so please everyone, don't commit crimes. And oddly enough, that has been presented by leadership as an answer.
Ultimately, when chaos reins, people band together to deal with it. And they form a solution that becomes law and order. It's a natural function of society. Nothing to do with political ideology or a right wing person does not beleive in government or organizations.
So we are at a place where chaos reigns because law and order is failing. It not necessarily law and order as per the police, but rather the justice system. But that is part of law and order. Until we get that back so there are consequences, then we will see varying views trying to fix a void created by lack of law and order.
Personally, if criminals feel there are no consequences, then it is up to others to ensure there are consequences. I think that is the natural evolution which leads to centralized law and order. It is a response to people arbitrarily dispensing justice. I don't think we ever had a time in human history where people said crime was ok because there was no other way of addressing it.

Was thinking about this while doing chores this afternoon...in no ways are people who believe in property rights trying to impose their will on those people who wish to not act as such, as I said myself, you want to encourage and help the criminals, by all means go for it, make it publicly known you will...but notice how those people who chose not to act, also believe they should be able to impose their will on those who do believe in property rights? Why is that?

All I know is that if someone breaks into my house where my wife and little kids are sleeping it’s not gonna go well for them. Really wish we had similar laws on protecting yourself and your property as our southern friends. It’s pretty sad when u can go to jail for trying to protect your farm while the bastards thieving walk free. Remember getting into a fairly heated conversation about the Stanley case at a family get together around the time that happened. I was labelled a racist by my city relatives on the grounds that I would have a different opinion if it was a white kid who had been shot. My response being that I don’t care what colour the skin is, a thief is a thief.

It is different degrees of tolerance. I doubt I would go out to my shop if I saw a truck and 4 guys out there at 2 am. I have a few long guns but a hand gun would be more practical in a building in that situation. But walking into an unknown situation may not be my smartest lifetime decision. So if I am not going in there to confront them then I am probably better off in the house and a position to do something there if they decide the shop stuff isn't to their liking.
However, if this is the 7th time in a year someone has come to my property and demonstrated they aren't there just to admire the lawn, then I would expect my tolerance to be very different. And I may be inclined to effect a change.
And that is what I am getting at in regards to law and order. Eventually two things happen, the crime stops, or the crime escalates to where people organize to make it stop. Crime is not likely to stop, even in the great reset of not owning anything, therefore it is likely to escalate. So there is a point where most everyone will tolerate some crime, and there will be a point where most people won't tolerate any more crime. It's just a matter of where those lines get drawn. We are talking about the same people here. Same situations. Same circumstances. But different responses based on where they feel their tolerance has ended.

I agree Ken, same thing happened to my brother inlaw. 3 thugs broke into his shop and drove off with his side by side. It was two 17-19 teen boys and a girl. My brother inlaw heard the break in ran to his door in his undies. He saw them drive off but didnt follow them in case there were more and could threaten his sleeping family. He called the rcmp but by the time they responded it was impossible to find the thugs. I think I would pull the trigger if I saw them in my yard. These days I dont take a chance.
Actually ,I know it sounds boring but I hate buying toys for my self. No snowmobiles and stuff like that . Toys like that are like a lighten rod to thieves. I always say the most valuables I have are my kids and wife and if someone crosses that line, well than its going to escalate to something fierce.
