Yeah, not a Christmas thread. I am curious how everyone is dealing with thieves and trespassers. Right now it is eerily quiet, but I know what is coming. As I mentioned in another thread, there are 5 of us that make regular patrols overlapping each others area. Seems to work ok as none of us had anyone try to get anything out of the yard. A guy I help out regularly told me to join the rural crime watch. Cost 20 bucks to join and get some fancy yellow and black signs. Told him no thanks, I would sooner put that towards lead. But you get to go to meetings with the RCMP blah blah blah. I told him do the RC's let you know when known thieves get out of jail? You all know the answer. Yet if a dangerous criminal gets released its on the teeveee, talk about hypocrisy. Him and I are on the same page when it comes down to it, but just looking at options to protect the neighborhood. Most of us have cameras to some extent, but the reality is the mars rover sends back better pictures. And lets face it, if I pull into your yard dressed as I usually do to feed cows all you will get is what I am driving and a guy who looks 350 pounds and a dirty license plate lol. So I guess what I am asking is if there is anything that we can do better. It is a pain in the ass to have to do regular patrols and does cost fuel, but I guess it is still cheaper then what you can loose. Are we the only ones that look out for each other? I really haven't heard anyone else doing this.

Thanks for brining this up, it reminds me I need to get some camera quotes going.
A couple months ago when I was still pretty laid up and sleeping on the couch at around 02:00 someone pounds on my front door, I jump up off couch, dog is inside barking at door and I get to door and no one is there... motion light out front is on. Go in bedroom wake up wife and give her a baseball bat, get my pants on and grab my glock, call 911, deputies 20 minutes out. Told dispatch I'm going out after them and they best provide quick answers. Could not find anyone, super foggy night. Deputies get there and we see no signs of anyone. They think someone wrecked out and was looking for help, I said people looking for help don't run away in under 15 seconds. My thought is they were banging on the door to get someone to open it and force their way in, german shepherd barking on the inside made them think twice so they high tailed it out of here.
Iowa is a stand your ground state. I have absolutely no desire to shoot someone but if confronted with making a choice between them and my family, they are in trouble.
Lot of shitbags around anymore, and it only will get worse.

Relation addressed hoc committee other day. Had 5 minutes to do so and then available for questions. Guess it was a rural women’s issues thing. Anyway her topic was rural crime. They’ve been hit multiple times. Have cameras and security etcetera. Other ladies addressed other topics. Those Ottawa pricks could give two bloody shits and were more interested in the rural broadband issue. She was so pissed she came unglued. Later, one of the committee must been shamed enough to let back on to discuss further. Now Canada and USA have both federal liberal leadership. The hug a thug mentality does not do anything to keep the population feel safe, let alone rural people further from police protection. Fml

To be fair snapper, if you have good internet maybe you can tweet crimes/911 to the RCMP better . It does bother me that the cops will go on tv and say there is a dangerous person getting released, but they refuse to tell us one on one when known thieves are getting released.

Cpt usa, you are lucky to be an american. If we shoot a native for self defense or try proving that in court you will most likely end up behind bars. This has happened many times. Good honest folks who defend themselves usually end up with all the indian bands breathing down there throats. My view if someone invades my property is shoot first and ask questions later.

We've been pretty good here for the last couple of years ever since things has really escalated and ended up in a cop being shot. At least the scumbag that shot him died in prison last year, think he over dosed. Have read in the paper the last few weeks in police reports about stolen vehicles, I guess with Covid people don't talk as much as I hadn't heard anything about it and it was in our RM. Not sure how you stop it, can't be on guard 24/7, and police don't seem to give a crap, likely because the court system is so screwed up that anything they do just gets tossed out anyway.

A big dog helps keep people away. Our area has been ok but not too far away there is a lot of trouble. I know the RCMP get tired of arresting a guy and having him released the next day only to arrest him the next weekend again. Even when you have the guy on camera with the licence plate of their vehicle the cops can’t do much unless they are caught in the act which seems like BS to me.

I too own a backhoe but posting my property with such signage would definitely result in a visit by the RCMP. Have never had a positive experience with them before so likely would not improve things by doing so! Sometimes best to just keep quiet and not let the world know how you feel or know what you are capable of.

Two weeks ago there was about five break-ins in four days including two Hutterite colonys( Lethbridge AB area ). Not much said from the police until the victims started tweeting about patrolling the area themselves, two people arrested before the first patrol started. Coincidence? maybe but I think they didn't want to be embarrassed by a bunch of farmers doing their job. You likely can't find the truth but I would bet they were recently released from jail. There needs to be some work camps set up again, the current punishment is no deterrent at all, just a place to get three squares a day and a roof over their heads.

Was anything said of what was stolen, was there a theme of any sort as in it being tools, vehicles stolen or some other commodity that the thieves were after. I wonder if in the cases you described if it was the same group of thieves hitting one place after another.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could bring back indebted servitude (i think that's the term) to deal with repeat offenders? They might just learn something and become contributing members of society.

Definitely the same two guys, there were cameras in almost all the places they broke into that supplied very good pictures. I was hauling grain and came across two guys backed into an approach with the hood up and when I stopped to see if they were ok ( -25 afternoon ), the one guy came running to my truck to say they were good, just stopped to tighten a battery clamp. While I was loading I replayed this in my mind and it didn't seem quite right so I called the nearest neighbour to where they were. Already gone. I made my mind up that I had better join in the patrol for the night but by the time I had supper the word came out that there was an arrest. After seeing the pictures, sure enough I was talking to the one that afternoon.
They didn't seem to be after tools or vehicles, they got $10,000 worth of drugs and a 22 from a feedlot, $800 cash from the office at one colony from what I hear. Went right through the office of a large greenhouse during business hours, plus a feedlot and two colonies, all of which have lots of people living right on the yards. Pretty ballsy.
Some may recall from the old forum where I had a tractor stolen two years ago. Talked to the head RCMP afterwards and asked what became of the case and he said they knew who it was but they were waiting to catch them red handed. I think they try to keep order but probably get fed up with the catch and release program.
We defiantly need something better when it comes to policing. When I tried to call in the info I had about these two guys I couldn't even get through to the local RCMP. Pisses me off when a service department for farm equipment has an after hours service where my call will bw taken by a live person but my local police have an answering machine. God help anyone not prepared to defend themselves and hoping for the police to get there. I think Captain assessed his situation bang on, his knock on the door was to see if they could get someone to open or figure out if anyone was home. Glad he had a dog to scare them off.

You're over thinking here, of course you wouldn't post such a sign, thats just a pic off the net, the point is what the sign suggests, that is what is going to be happening more

I understand that it was a joke but my point was that the police don't have much of a sense of humor. And if something happens to someone on your property (as happened in the Stanley case) things get a little tense in the relationship between property owners and law enforcement.
