Thinking back on that theme of school interaction with parents, obviously way before the internet or cell phones were a thing ( frick, we were on a party line with a rotary phone and certainly no answering machine ) there was no such thing as calling all parents to pick children up. If they heard that a storm was coming of major significance, the school board probably were the ones that informed the school who in turned informed all the bus drivers and we all got hauled home. If the power went out, we all got hauled home etc etc. It seemed once that child stepped on the bus the rural school system did all they could to see that each child was brought back home. Obviously that is not how they do things now in Manitoba and no idea how its done here anymore either.
Kevlar, you get your children home and then DO NOT ANSWER YOU'RE PHONE unless its your family until Monday , if "they" try reaching you through you're wife, you have her tell them your out plowing snow !

Feels more like winter these last few days than it did most of the winter! -20 the last few nights, it’s a good thing though, I’m hauling a bunch of grain all week so I need the ground frozen, Thursday it gets a little warmer so it might get a little tricky. My yard and around the bins is a solid sheet of ice, I’ve never seen it this bad before, not sure why, likely thawed and froze so many times. I tried to scratch it up some yesterday with the loader, helped a little but it’s so hard.

They are talking about a few inches of snow for us this weekend again. Been cooler these last few days but no wind and sun shining it’s not too bad.

My friend did that last winter . Slipped on ice and crushed some bones . My yard is the same . Likely from a few rain storms.

I notice a few guys have their seeders pulled up to their shops ! With no snow on the fields , once it warms up next week , the ditches are going to drain fast . Other than the ditch’s , fields are pretty dry . Some warm spring showers sure would be nice to even out the field soil conditions . Lots of places the soil is powder .
I was looking at two quarters that had next to no rain last year and no snow on it this winter . They were 50 bushel oats last year ! Yeah not good ! Safe to say next to no moisture starting off this year ! I practise zero tillage so there is not much else I can do but hope for an April showers .
I think a lot of guys will be itching to go in a couple weeks ! It feels like the beginning of March.
We missed a Colorado low today . We have been missing storms since two years ago when we had that big flood.
Do you guys get itchy based on the calendar date or very early dry soil conditions .

3 sided diceWe’re in no rush! Could still go skidooing here if the snow wasn’t solid ice, had planned on doing our annual Bravo ride last weekend but canceled it just because the icy conditions would completely melt down the sliders. We never get in a rush in the spring, used to try getting something in early but most times it just ended in disaster, it can be nice all April then cool off to normal and either freeze everything you sowed or stress it so badly it never recouperates. We wait until May.

As a rule. I don’t want much crop out of the ground by May 20. We seem to get a frost just before May long weekend. (Normal time for May long)

Still not healed proper. Makes feeding cattle kinda difficult.

I agree kevlar , you are quite a bit further north than my farm but I think the same principle holds true. Earliest I have ever seeded was April 12 in 2012. Crop was good that year but I remember the oats struggled at first and some rotted in the ground . I am not convinced canola can acclimate to cold if seeded in mid to late April. Best luck seeding early is wheat , but I rarely seed that crop anymore ! If you believe some who believe 90 days ( is it ninety days) after a period of heavy fog , will bring heavy rain , well that time is approaching !

This is what about 75% of the yard looks like. Ugly out tonight, cold and windy 🥶. Sounds like only another day or so then it gets better.

Do you guys get itchy based on the calendar date or very early dry soil conditions . No, the best crops are almost always planted in May. For example in 2021 it was quite dry here in spring and I had about half my cereals in when conditions deteriorated to the point where I was not confident it would start properly, so I parked the drill for over a week. Intention was to wait until there was a very strong chance of rain and then fire up. So when that scenario happened I went at it and not only did the crop have a good start but it also made use of some later season rain that the early cereals didn't. The late wheat out-yielded a lot of the early stuff just across the fence by almost two to one! So from experience I would never rush out early to put crop into poor conditions. If it were to not rain then there isn't going to be much of a crop anyways...

Looks like spring is finally going to come, from-20’s all last week to double digits most of this week, some saying into the teens. I’m looking forward to it.
