Canola that caught at least an extra inch of rain is a lot better than stuff on lighter land that didn’t. Close to an extra bushel for ever 1/10 of rain. Really noticed that in the barley, except probably three bushels for every tenth. And the hot humid no wind, that made hay tough to dry, sure got the sclerotinia going in the canola. Weird year. Humid and too dry to finish the crop - that's an oxymoron, ha.

People actually add water to their canola? Isn't that illegal? No , it’s not , but you have to use potable water . Using unsanitary water is prohibited . Not sure why some critisize that practice . It’s a natural process . Just has to be done correctly! We just got a couple bins setup with the OPI fan automation. They say its slow to hydrate grain vs drying it down but will see how it works. Might be better to get going in canola as soon as it goes through the machine and dry it down to 10, then to wait until its 10 and then drops to 5 in a couple hours? Anyone notice the crazy amount of crickets? Got some trying to get into my porch through some bad weather stripping, maybe I should lay down a bead of toothpaste by the gap they are getting in?

Was going to mention the crickets, never seen so many before. Probably about the same amount in places as when I have a grasshopper problem. Straight cutting peas and would see a cricket every 6 inches in many parts of the field when the header cleared off the crop mat they hid under. Need a broom and shovel to clean up the dead one by the shed sliding door track.
Finished yellow mustard yesterday, swathed 2 1/2 weeks ago. Used to straight cut it but often waiting till early October for low spots to dry and pig weeds to die off got to be more of a risk not worth taking. And it does shell some in strong wind when left that long. So once again, better in the bin than in the field. All the canola around me is still standing and waiting. As is the story for this year, nice swath lots of straw, should have been an average crop of 16 to 19 bu/ac but went 13 BPA. I should expect brown flax to go about low 20s. Try straight cutting the weed free areas when we get the next sunny days and see how that goes. May leave the kochia sections of field stand for a while yet and see if we get a killing frost soon. Otherwise will need to swath.

Funny We had crickets galore for two years ! This year just a couple ! Ahhhh shop is so quiet and none in the house . I did spray the yard and shop last year . That chemical is long lasting . This year I noticed a couple crickets who dared to enter past the spray zone were stop dead in their tracks :

I found the last couple years there were heavy crickets but this year has been way calmer, the shop only has a few here and there making racket.

What did you spray? Was it Tempo? Yes sprayed tempo I put a tablespoon in a 4 gallon hand held sprayer . That is potent chemical It’s amazing it last over the winter when sprayed in the shop . Ok I know it’s not proven , but I think tempo helps deter mice as well ! Since spraying , I don’t get mice in the shop ! I was going to spray it again this weekend to see if it helps .

Back into the canola after a day break from a few showers. Testing around 9 and has a way better sample then when it was under 6

You guys will be almost done by the time we get anything serious done over here. Hardly any canola done here. Maybe about half the wheat. Showers slowed us down this past week and the canola hasn't been down long enough. A couple of my neighbors just finished swathing their canola today and other guys still have canola that is not ready to swath. Still half of September and all of October for harvest, so lots of time if we don't get an early winter.

A friend of mine already did two tandem loads of soybeans. I think end of next week soybeans will start coming off near my farm . I still think my hollands will be last week of September. Winklers maybe end of first week in October . Kinda excited to see how they will yield . Wheat , oats and canola is 95 percent cleaned up in my area . Some guys are done tillage already ! Corn is even drying down quickly from two weeks of high heat! I hope we get a long fall , so much field work to do ! Round up worked great in the heat .

Soybeans are turning fast, all the hot wind is having an impact on things.
Got into the canola today, stuff seeded before the spring snowstorm. It turned out about as good as it looked, which makes it probably the worst canola I have had since 2011. Later stuff looks like twice the crop, so maybe we average up.
Been ignoring the corn as it has a ways to go yet, but the weather has been all anyone could hope for in September. If it stays hot perhaps it will make something after all.

I’d say cereals are 75% done in the area. Just the guys who didn’t get seeding early have them left. And that’s not a weather thing it’s just a farm thing. Canola harvest might drag out for some as they have just been sprayed or swathed.

Not next week but week after for beaners. Hoping the corn dries up.
