With high price npks how many guys are going to seed peas or oats in 22. The new pea plant in portage is great for western canada. I have a feeling canola will have to stay as is in price to capture the acres to keep new crushing plants going and existing ones not going dry. Maybe 25 bucks a bushel? Where I farm canola is like dating a beautiful blonde bombshell woman, she ll bleed you dry, be on you in the good times but will disappear when ever she feels like it and leave you in ruins!!!! lol Yes speaking from past experience !he he. I am sticking with oats and signed hundred bushel contract at 6.5 a bushel for 2022. I just cant turn that kind of stability down where I farm where oats usually do 140-180bushel an acre and its a crop that will handle big rains better than wheat or barley. The pea idea sounds good but with our monsoon rains usually peas disappear (drown out)faster than canola.
What are new crop 22 flax prices fetching? That is another good low nitrogen using crop with great potential. With canola at 21 bucks now and 40 buck flax prices I may ditch some soybean acres for flax.
Thats one big difference us canadians seem to have over our american farmer friends is a wider range of crop alternatives except for Maybe the dakotas or montana areas.

Flax isn't a low nitrogen use crop, have always fertilized it the same as canola and always have little residual left at the end of the year.

Damn it, missed an opportunity to sell some oats at $9.81 a bushel today, checked the email earlier but was busy so didn't give it full attention and just assumed it was 8 instead of 9 as it has been for a few days now. Sounds like there will be more chances like this come up in the future.

I haven't been around long enough to know what the price ratio should be but it certainly looks out of whack to me.

With high price npks how many guys are going to seed peas or oats in 22. Will there be any seed available? If there is, what will they be charging? Oat seed last year was around $6/bushel with around $3+/bushel market prices. Peas??

Got a text from local elevator advising me it might not be a bad idea to get some canola seed booked as he's been told some of the canola seed samples aren't coming back with good results. Not sure if it's poor germ or vigor.
Next year is looking to be a total shit show, still haven't ruled out sitting on the sidelines and watching this gong show play out. Something as simple as a blown tire will sideline a piece of equipment for a week, if not all spring. God forbid something major.

Talking with a few smaller growers near me, summerfallow is looking quite appealing for next year.

Summerfallow or seeding a grazing crop for the cows to run on looks like an option. Going forward we may be going backwards to the old ways. Inputs may not only be unaffordable but also unattainable.

Yes, basf sent a letter out by registered mail which I was required to sign for. Everybody got one I would guess, Probably a good idea by their part so our crop rotations for next year get a second look so they will be free of residue damage.

So I will be finish my corn tomorrow. What a disaster. Going along harvesting 4’ high corn and the yield monitor said zero than 4 up to 15 bushels. In the lows spots as high as 125 should avg 60. That’s what 1.5” of water gives you I guess. Crop insurance on every crop. Worst crop ever in my career of farming.
