I would get a '04 or newer skidoo, much lighter and easier to ride and handle. Rotax engines are good on gas and reliable. Yamaha would be second choice but they are heavier units more for sit down trail riding.

I would reccomend a late 90's early 2000 polaris xc 500 or 600. Been the most bulletproof of the bunch. 800s are high strong and need work much more often

Used to be pretty sure thing that any 3 cylinder motor was doomed, always seemed to have trouble with one cylinder or the crankshaft!

Yamaha nailed a home run with the 700 triple SX Viper, there wasn’t one thing about that machine I didn’t like or thought could be improved on. Completely stock it did 200 kmh by the speedometer, did it twice, that was enough for me! The guy I bought it from at the dealer kept saying “you know, a little clutching and tweaking, we could really make this thing sing!” I kept it stock, it sang good enough. It would stay neck and neck with the RX1 4 stroke. Unfortunately I went from that Viper to the Yamaha 4 stroke Phazer, and everything about that machine was a disappointment, the only time in my life I hated snowmobiling was when I owned that thing. I wish Yamaha would go back to a two stroke, the 4 stroke is amazing but just too heavy.

Isn't Arctic Cat making Yamaha snowmobiles now?

Kind of a merger, mostly Yamaha components.

You’d almost think they were all made by the same company now because they all look the same. I liked it when each brand had models that looked different. I had two Phazers, a ‘91 and a’93, they were still my favourite looking sleds and liked how the headlight turned.
You meet a group out riding and you can’t tell who it is because every machine looks the same and almost all attire is black. I like to be different, I’ve always had a red helmet, so usually I’m the leader or follow at the back, when people ride with me they know to follow the red helmet, or if they look back and see the red helmet they know everyone is accounted for! I need a new helmet but it’s hard to find a red one.

20 year old sleds it is hard to beat Skidoo. Rode a lot with friends that ran all Skidoo and pretty trouble free. Got my 2005 Polaris 600 144" up for sale but no takers yet. The Polaris 600 is also hard to beat of the vintage, 800s had some issues. Owners play a big part of that I expect. I notice a lot of sleds listed saying recent engine work like top end done or whatever. I don't get it. Probably lack of attention because more and more people don't know what they are doing. If it runs it gets driven, even if carb is plugged and lean, ice in fuel leaning it out, driving an iced up trail and sliders are melting because no cooling so engine is melting too. I suspect people who think all you do is pull on the throttle and go are the one having engine problems.
A 136" track is a nice all around sled, especially for the wife. Way too many times someone on a 121"is hating life when not on a trail. The favorite maneuver is to stop in some deeper snow then go to take off and someone cracks the throttle and sinks to the running board on a 121". My wife loves the mountain sleds here, she hates any kind of trail riding. We go tool around exploring bushes and treeline or a coulee - wherever we want to go thats where we take the sleds so have 144s with 2" track as that fits us best.

Was thinking something 20ish years old. Lots out there with under 3000k for under 3g that still look decent in the pictures. Not looking for a mountain sled just something decent for around the farm and the lake. Mostly for my wife? Went once 20 years ago and she had fun. I have an 01 XC 800 SP for sale for $2800.

No doubt. I think that guy missed the boat, I’ve noticed the high priced stuff isn’t moving like it did last year . Actually seems like a lot of stuff has slowed down, in volume anyway, not so much in price.
