Looks like a good start there Kevlar, no need to spend big dollars on a complicated drill based on those pictures. A dry spring I would often see burnt barley tips. Usually easiest to look where there is overlap and fertilizer got doubled up. You may have some runs carrying more fertilizer. Not just hose routing, but if I can trust my seed count per run on the Agtron monitor then cart fan speed can also change distribution, the right fan speed and balance isn't too bad to the 6 towers but start pushing way more fan speed then absolutely necessary and I notice seed count tends to go higher in some towers. When I do a stationary check and spin the metering auger to check for plugged runs I would definitely say I have some runs getting more fertilizer than others.
To get back to a question Oatking posted a few days ago about RM reclassification of land, yes I remember dad saying that did happen. This was probably three decades ago that classification was improved one letter on a piece or two. I can't see it being done now unless a guy cleared a bunch of bush or leveled land to make equipment easier to maneuver. It would have to be like 20% of the area or something to catch attention I would think. Me cleaning up a couple bushes and rock piles or moving a little dirt with scraper at a low spot wouldn't do it I am sure.

Been hot here the last few days and into the low 30’s for most of the week. Still no rain, I would think the crops will start to feel the effects by the end of the week with those temperatures and no rain in the forecast. Got to at least drive through a nice rain for five minutes yesterday coming home from my son’s ball game, but unfortunately it was 60 miles away from home.

Looks like you better have your umbrella close by today there Kevlar. So far going all around me, sun shining right now and dark skies in all directions. Not a single drop yet, I know of about 3/10 to the east and south about 7 miles away.

Listened to thunder all damn day and not a drop of rain, I am sure some got a big rain somewhere, as the systems seemed stalled.

Was spraying some wheat today and the 1/4 close to the yard was good. The 3 1/4s 6 miles away were almost water stressed and plants turning yellow in big parts of the fields.

I’ll take this anytime over being too wet. The heat can take a hike anytime. Amen too that! I swear an area the size of a quarter had an inch of rain something fierce the other night. Water still standing today and dry as dust on the other side of road. Like a bullseye! How many times have you got to a field in the morning , and all of a sudden be surprised by how wet it is? This heat is delaying my oat spray jobs. Not sure why wheat can be sprayed at the heat of the day and show little stress signs but oats can’t take it. Has anyone seen a difference between 10 gal an acre compared to 5 on oats? I spray 5 .is 10 a lot safer ? Say with ethier buctril m or stellar ?

Always spray 5-6g on oats. Never had any damage from that.

Is it too hot for flea beetles? Haven’t seen one in any of the canola yet. Couple more days and it will be far enough advanced that they shouldn’t be an issue.

I agree , either their life cycle is declining or the buteo insecticide is doing what it’s suppose to do! How are the grass hoppers on the western prairies? I started seeing and hearing crickets already . Seems like a month too early. Interesting how some of the early signs we notice or pick up on now that are out of there normal time frame , May point to an early frost? Sorry I said it.

Early frost definitely a possibility. I noticed it last fall and through the winter - we get two or 3 weeks of unseasonably warm weather then the opposite for 2 to 3 weeks. November was a real b##ch here, January nice. April cold, then warmer weeks in May. June starting off hot, see if we get colder than normal for a stretch. So it comes down to when we get a cold spell in fall. But a warm spell in late summer can really push things forward so probably not going to be too much concern for those with seeding done by June 1. Some around me not seeded yet.
Saw my first grasshopper yesterday, baby one about 1/4" long.
Volunteer barley and most likely wild oats doing really well in my flax. Seeded it just before the rain so add the heat and lots of stuff growing now. Will spray my wheat when the heat goes down in a few days then do clethodim on the flax and wait with the broadleaf.

Another decent shot of rain about 7 miles south but nothing at home. Was running around picking some stones with the quad today, I think the crop is going into survival mode, kind of coming to a standstill except for the low spots that look more advanced and thicker. Canola was going limp today with the heat, likely trying to conserve moisture. Lawn is browning up already.
Sure different than most years around here, can’t say I’ve seen it this hot and dry this early in the year, dad said it reminds him of the later ‘60’s with the heat and wind.
