Almost Can't believe that I'm doing incrop in May. Been going on barley for a couple days and did a few fields of canola before that. First barley is 5 leaf. Wow 5 leaf barley ! I think we all deserve at least one early bumper harvest ! Having extra time in September is rare ! Gary , at that pace if you were farming by cpt USA area, you could grow two crops ! Lol

Had a tough time getting the crop off before the snow flew. I never count 🐔 🐔 before they hatch, 😆.

Good day yesterday, 80 acres left to go.
Sure seems to me also that things are up and running pretty early.
Another curious thing, I didn't mention it to the wife but I noticed a crap load of moths in the garage last few nights when I turn on the lights. A trade mark of Saskatchewan summer of July and August is outside lights being a flury of moths but I can't remember noticing much for moths in even mid June. Wife commented on it last night and said she saw cabbage moths already and asked me if that was odd - I would think so, seems to me cabbage would be heading and looking good then cabbage moths show up out of no where. Cat tails and moths in abundance thus far.

I like the never count your chickens before they hatch reference.
My wife decided she wanted chickens at the encouragement of my vet, two women who ignore me, argue with me, expect me to operate on their schedule, get a lot of money from me, and having sex with neither. I think I literally have two wives.
So she got 6 chickens, then 8 more, then another two. Got a coup, built a chicken run, other crap. I figured up what she spent and at today's prices she needs 9000 eggs to break even. She has gotten 1.

Home grown eggs cost probably twice as much as store bought eggs! I can’t blame anyone but myself, I like chickens, got another 25 this spring.
I’ve noticed a few things that seemed early as well, dragonflies was one of them. Seems funny considering it was a long cool spring this year, only really been warm for the last couple of weeks.
Still no rain here, been going all around us. Crops are looking good and have good subsoil moisture to keep it going for awhile, but canola could use some rain, looks good but quite a bit just laying in the dust. Frustrating when it’s mostly been sown on land that either didn’t get sown last year because it was too wet or drowned out after. It had good moisture when I sowed it but being pretty much summer fallow it dried out after working it. At least what is coming up is in a sprint, was up a few days after seeding and can make out the rows already, hopefully outgrow the flea beetles.

Everythings up and running here. Started incrop herbicide on wheat this morning, 3-4 leaf stage I'd say. Beans are loving the hot muggy weather and are flying along. Canola was up in 6-7 days and looks decent but the dry windy weather seems to be affecting it more than other crops. Seeing some flea beetles but should have another week of coverage from the Buteo so hoping it gets past them before needing to spray. Pushed hard on Monday and top dressed all the wheat and got a soft 3/10in on Tuesday, 10mi west of us got 1.8in with hail from the same system. Glad I missed the hail but crops will be in rough shape if we don't get more moisture in the next 7-10 days.

Nothing here ready to spray yet and haven’t seen anyone else going either. Haven’t had much more than a few drops since we started seeding so very few weeds coming, but I know they’re there! Got about a half inch on some of our farthest land, and a couple tenths maybe on a couple other quarters, but right around home, where the bulk of our land is, hasn’t had a tenth total all year. If you go 5 miles in all directions they have had some rain,, anywhere from a half inch to 1.5. Quite the opposite of what usually happens here where I get the most rain all the time. I’m sure it’ll come, just hope it’s not 5 inches in a couple hours.

Started spraying the other day here. Everything looks good so far, barley is a bit yellow in the low spots from the rain this week and last. Another 6/10's last night won't help it at all. See some flea beetles in the canola but only 1 field did we spray for them...rest look big enough that they will grow through any damage. Have another 600 acres to do then we are caught up but with chance of rain forecast for next few days might drag it out a bit.

Finished seeding yesterday afternoon and started raining 2 hours after getting home. About 1/4" so far. More in forecast. Can seed with any tool if a guy gets a half inch of rain right after pulling out of the field. First mustard seeded five days ago is coming out of the ground, looks like the germination will be ok on that bin run seed. Didn't feel like paying $3/lb to get that "certified" word printed on my seed supply, and won't be anytime soon either.
Now need to start thinking about hail insurance.

This canola has been in for exactly one week, Pioneer 45CM39. I always like how the Pioneer stuff comes up quick and gets going, part of why we grow it. Used to really like their 45M35 I believe it was, came up quick and for whatever reason flea beetles didn’t like to touch it, it looked like it was a bit fuzzy so always wondered if that’s why, a few times we had it beside other varieties and they would hit the other stuff pretty hard but there would hardly be a bite out of this stuff, but of course they discontinued it 😡. Have some Brett Young as well and it’s looking good but I’d say it looks a couple days behind the Pioneer but was sown a day earlier. Wheat and oats looking good, barley as well but noticing some yellowing on the tips of some, almost looks like when it’s too wet but that can’t be the case. As best as I can see it follows the drill on a run here and there but not for any special reason, wonder if not having any rain is making the phosphate and potash a little too hot? Just a touch under 30 pounds actual phos and about 7 pounds potash, so not anything crazy. It doesn’t seem to be setting it back other than being yellow.

last year this land had 10-15 feet of flood water on it! Nice to be able seed it and see oats growing. After a flood this land resembles winkler or altona land . Very silty and loamy . Is that soy bean stubble? and what did you use to get it so black?

Yes its soybean stubble but from two years ago. its black because of being in summer fallow last year . couldnt get it seeded last year. AFTER the water reseeded last year the top of the soil had a white colouring . I should knew why cause I majored in soil science at the Uof M. You reminded me to look back in my soil science books. I still have them in my office after 28 years!
