Got a bit over an inch again last night, wish I could send some to you guys, we don’t need any more for awhile. Hear some planes this morning, imagine guys doing fungicides, not sure I’d want to try doing that with skinnies on the sprayer right now, would make a mess. We don’t normally spray fungicides but will have to keep an eye out for anything. Have done some in the past and it never seemed to pay for itself.

Alkali and compacted areas not doing so well here either. Have a few plants but mainly kochia starting to take hold. Wet spring plus a 3/4" rain in 30 minutes when crop was emerging really lowered the possibility of establishing anything in those places. Crops are looking decent but showing a need for some rain as the sandy spots in wheat are a noticeably different color but then those areas need a lot of rain through summer to not do that.
I rented a whishek disc last fall for sloughs, one thing I did was run it along the ditch right by the farm. Put it down about 8" to level off the edge between the ditch and field, turned the ground fairly black. Along comes that 3/4" rain and seals that dirt off and now I have kochia in my mustard where there never was kochia before. Right beside where the wheat stubble wasn't turned black by the disc I have a really nice crop with no kochia. I suspect if I worked a lot more of my ground black then I would have a lot more kochia. This is good ground - not compacted or alkali areas. Would have been fine with a gentle rain. Never really had an issue before with our ground crusting over but never done such tillage work before either.
Grasshoppers still pretty much normal summer levels around the yard but get into some slough or bush areas and they are definitely in excessive amounts. Will see how the summer goes. Sprayed the home section 10 days ago to say I did something whereas rest of the fields looks fairly normal for grasshopper levels.

Did some fungicide on a bit of barley here. Start on the wheat in the next few days. Crops looking good overall. we got 1/4" from the rain last night, but it looked really dark to the East of me. Had thunder rumbling almost constantly for about 3 hours.

Had a thunderstorm roll through just before daybreak, dropped a couple tenths. Crop can take quite a bit of moisture now, the plants are pretty big and with the canopy even that little amount will stay put and not evaporate. Never saw much return from fungicide here so probably not going to happen. If we had wheat in probably would hit that though. Trying to pick a day to start cutting hay - might be today. Supposed to be under a high pressure system for a few days and other than a couple tenths forecast for Saturday should be fairly dry for the next 7 or 8 days.

Heard Brandon got 2 inches in half an hour this afternoon and are now dealing with flood waters. My uncle seen a tornado north of Neepawa from the same system. I could see it going just south of us, was really dark, nothing right at home but some a couple miles south of here and sounds like it got more the further south you went. Building up here again, hopefully nothing materializes, don’t need any more, and have my son’s ball windup, I want to hit a home run!

Canola seems to be doing the best in these dry conditions . Lots of beauty crops out there. It’s amazing how well canola can hang on compared to the cereals!! Not confident we will see a big rally in canola anymore.

kevlar this must have been the flooding you are referring to in Brandon!

Have read some people got up to 5 inches from that storm, can’t confirm how accurate that is, second hand information. Some people tend to round up in situations like this.

Supposedly a few funnel clouds seen down your way OD, doesn’t sound like any of them touched down. Since when did central Manitoba become tornado alley? Funny thing was I never got any alerts this time.

That's what I was thinking too, they just confirmed the Killarney tornados but didn't have the same warnings as the other time. We got a robo call from Neepawa town of last time. They did have some warnings on the satellite tv but they cancelled them before the funnels showed up. There was some funnels in the clouds in pictures taken by the Neepawa coop agro East of Neepawa in the afternoon, they were by Keyes/Helston. We had the occasional shower here through the afternoon but nothing significant My Dad has lots of tornado stories, they are not new here by any stretch of the government's imagination. Amazing the change from dry to wet this week!

Water is cheap if your spraying $20/acre fungicide on it.

Soybeans really moving after the Friday report. One analyst in the Manitoba cooperator was saying if they drop beam yield from 51 to 47 bushels an acre the US would run out of beans ! Cpt is 177 bushel an acre corn a reliable estimate ? The last USDA report is like a recession report! Hard to believe the numbers! Maybe canola will ride the bean coat tails to 20 dollars a bushel !

amazing the progress in crop growth in one month. First picture is June 6th and the last one is taken July 5th. Canola started blooming last week. L357 invigor. This seems like a good replacement to l252 !

Some canola around here is turning white. Just ran out of gas. The bottom side of the leaf is facing up.
