Well check your bins, I just found my canola is heating, I think this year's crop is extra unstable it seems???

Thanks for the reminder, hopefully it's not serious and only a small discount.

I heard some guys had 8-10 % dockage in canola so that would make things unstable.

Well check your bins, I just found my canola is heating, I think this year's crop is extra unstable it seems??? Can you give some information as to what bin size, what moisture level the canola went into the bin at, what temperature it went in at and if the bin has aeration. Also if it was swathed canola and how long in the swath, or if it was straight cut ?

Same thing here just watched dry canola 7.2 move from 5 C to 14 in a week .. good thing for those temp cables !!! just refitting the rest of the bins with those remotes .. nice just to get alert and go out and move and cool it down . not having to worry about what surprise there is when you start to unload ... that's what creates my sleepless nights!!!!!!..crazy 7.2 and 1.5 % dockage and heating up!!!

That's crazy radar..😳 What are you guys using for monitoring? Ours is the westeel easy check. Actually stores a lot if you remember to log the readings. Had a small 5000 flat bottom bin of barley that wouldn't drop from the 27 that it went in at. Moved most of it to an air bin - it's minus 5 now. Other than that the temps are steadily decreasing in the rest of the bins.

we had some canola that went in 6.5% heating up. caught it in time that didnt get docked but they would only take a certain amount per day. took a core out a few weeks after harvest and everything.

Have bin sense cables in for years,, was always stomach queching to go check the cables with the monitor,,installed 6 remote sensor readers a month ago about 6500$ and now installed 6 more 4000k$ lots of money ,,but being able to not worry small price to pay to check on 70000 bushels of storage..

Can you give some information as to what bin size, what moisture level the canola went into the bin at, what temperature it went in at and if the bin has aeration. Also if it was swathed canola and how long in the swath, or if it was straight cut ? 1500 bu friesen hoppers, one has about 700bu, did go in at 11% on 18 degree day Other one is full, averaged 9%, ambient was 17-20 degrees. No aeration. Not a lot of dockage, 2%. Swathed for a month, 22' swath. I was wanting to get the 700 bu out because of the higher moisture and I noticed when combining that in some areas of the field the swath was still green underneath the dry appearing top, this after a month of laying in a swath and some rain which is supposed to help cure it. It was seeded June 20, so when it was that close we combined thinking the window of opportunity was closing as we were into October. Temp cables would be nice, how many people have them in a 1500 bu bin? Aeration would be nice, how many people have that on small old bins like this? Would have hauled it in but safety on the truck and trailer is expired and have been waiting 3 months to get it done, but they are so busy.... This is getting out of hand, should have just risked it and took it in, but not sure they would have taken it anyway without a contract? Talked to Viterra, they are not very helpful, don't know when they are getting a canola train, they want samples. Quality grain wants to know what the samples are like. At this point they will be getting worse each day I would think. I just want to get it out asap.

At least get as much out of the bin as you can for now, load up your truck/ trucks and leave it on it for a few days to help it cool, then dump back in. Do that with each bin. My plan was to turn and check the bins later next week but now you have me worried 😬😬. We have turned the canola once since harvest but better check it again.
On the bright side all the bins still had snow on them earlier this week when the temperatures were just below freezing, never a good sign when one is melting off and the rest aren’t.

These had snow on them a week ago. I was surprised about that actually, they have a steep roof. I think our nice weather this week made them go nuclear, which is why I want to move fast on this, I could smell it today, was nothing a week ago. There are white lumps but it flows still and actually the truck loads didn't look bad overall, there was an odd lump but it mostly looked normal.

I think aeration is more important than cables, the grain will sweat a bit after harvest and running some air clears that out. The sample might average dry but there could be immature seeds still. My 20K bins of canola that are averaging 9-10% moisture are 7C or lower and the fan on each bin has run no more than 3 days total since harvest. Just find a cool night right away and take the initial heat out, then freeze it a bit later when it's cold out. This is also straight cut and not desiccated, so probably the situation most risky. IMO aeration works.

Your right on cooling it down is the answer..,, power is a issue and adding the rockets and fans ,, 1200$ for a cable and a remote monitor works for me now
