Have any of you ever gone quading in the Duck Mountains Manitoba? Me and my niece have been going on quad trips for a few years now and go fishing and camp over night for a night or two. Usually just leave from home, have some really nice riding around here, but was thinking of doing something a little different this year. Was just curious if any of you live near there or have rode there. From what I can find online, it sounds like they allow it with a pass, but then some things I have read says you can't. I haven't called the park yet, just thought I would see what you guys know. Or any suggestions for a good place to ride with good fishing and off the grid camping. Can't remember how many trips I have made now with my niece(s) and my nephew before that, and only once ever camped at a campground. The year my nephew and I stayed at the campground, there were tornado warnings, but that was before cell phones, which I don't allow anyway on the trip, only for emergencies. That evening there was golf ball sized hail. We were in a small dome tent, but we had no damage, most of the campers around us got written off! Ah, memories!

Most definitely quading happening in there. Only gone a couple times myself for a part day so not a great source of info. The neighbour kids seem to go most every weekend in summer. Not sure on the pass thing. Ignorance is bliss. Just gone when we did! A lot of the trails are where the designated snowmobile routes are in winter. Child’s Lake isn’t really off the grid but a number of trails come in there or near. One goes over to Blue lakes from there. Jack fish lake is way down what I call a turkey trail. Passable with pickup. And there’s lots of others. Don’t ask me about fishing. Not my first love lol. First post for me but you hit on something local so thought I’d comment at least.

Did a sled trip up there a couple of years ago and stayed at Wellman Lake Lodge. We don't like to ride main trails and so found a number of trails in the bush to go explore when heading south of the town. The main sled trail makes a loop down to Wellman Lake and then heads back up north. People who run the lodge would know about quadding.

Sounds promising, I will get a hold of one of the lodges shortly to get all the info. I have sledded there before, probably close to 30 years ago now! Dad has been there a few time over the last few years. I can't remember too much about what it was like, but do remember there being a pile of snow but most of the people just rode the groomed trails, was awesome off the beaten path!

Caught up spraying until next week, kids and I went to the lake to try out our new canoe and some fishing a couple night ago. Then today, my son and I both took a sick day. Came across a nest of pelicans, thought it best to keep our distance!
Have an over night bike trip planned in a couple weeks into the park with my nephew and a couple of his friends. First time for me doing that so should be an experience, hope the bears don't get me! Then hopefully some time this summer, a bunch of my family and I are planning on doing an overnight canoe trip somewhere.

Kevlar, I have a sure fire safety tip for you when it comes to bears, its so simple that you will say " why didn't I think of that !" . Its a three step plan, first buy a cheap but noisy whistle. Second, invite a slow rider along on the trip ( who you invite, use your imagination ). Third, give the whistle to that slow rider and tell him its just for safety sake so if he needs help we will come.
You are riding along and everything couldn't be going better and then you hear the whistle, something that sounded like screams as well. Pedal like hell away from that sound. You see, its just that darned simple, 1 .. 2 .. 3 ..
Have a fantastic trip

I enjoy going for a horseback ride in the evenings. Thankfully the mosquitos haven't been too bad this year. One of my neighbors did a little strip farming (not on purpose I'm sure) so there is a nice bare spot about 8' wide the length of his canola field! Perfect for riding

Do you send him a bill for the fertilizer the horse leaves behind?

I had thought about that also before you posted, looking at the positives and negatives and where that end result would lay. The fertilizer aspect should be a plus, however the viable weed seeds transported would be a negative. The ground being over packed, that would depend on the soil type and moisture content. Secretly mark out the line with a marker at the end of the field if you can and watch what the crop and weeds look like in future years.
Then again I may be the one full of horse shit for over analyzing the situation !

^^ Basically the same thoughts I had been having, lol. Keeping happy neighbors is important to me. Glad I have good neighbors.

Now you have me wondering, is that why they invited me??

Oh so you were not one of the main planners of the trip. I'd say load up with bear bangers ( they may be a fire hazard ) and a canister of bear spray. Refuse the whistle, that will throw them off and make them think they underestimated you and invite someone else as well who is even slower

Perfect for riding We have a neighbor at our other farm where dad has a cabin, she boards horses and teaches lessons and I think breaks them as well. She is on a horse every day for hours, she must put on thousands of miles each year. Pretty much any time we are over there, we cross paths somewhere. We let her ride across our property, but have to be careful anytime you go to have a leak, there's been a few times I've walked around the grain truck to go and just before I pull it out, she rides around the corner! lol One year we were combining canola, I had some time and had to take a crap, so I walked down to the cabin to use the outhouse. It was a nice day so just left the door open to enjoy the view (and let some fresh air in!) when to my horror, she and a few of the people she was teaching rode by! I slowly closed the door hoping they never noticed as there were a few trees between us, but a friend of my niece took lessons a few years after that, and she heard the story from my neighbor who had rode by me! A guy can't even get privacy on the most remote back 40! lol

Refuse the whistle, that will throw them off and make them think they underestimated you and invite someone else as well who is even slower I'm going to take a stick and pound of bacon. The stick isn't to fight off the bear, it's to stick in the spokes of one of their bikes. When they fall down, I will throw the bacon on them. Don't have to be faster than a bear, just smarter than your friends!
Actually had a bit of a face to face with a bear in my yard this morning. Was sitting out in the yard having a cup of coffee, looking across the road towards the bin yard and was petting a new kitten my son just got, so it was crawling all over me, kind of keeping me distracted. I was just thinking how quiet the chickens seemed to be, usually some kind of noise coming from them, they are only maybe 40 yards from the house. I just glanced in that direction and there was a bear sauntering along towards me, maybe 20 yards away by my garden. At first I panicked, then just started yelling at it, it was just a small black one, but still caught me off guard. Stupid chickens freak out if a chipmunk goes by but a bear walks withing feet of them, not a peep. They were likely whispering to each other "hey guys, watch this!"
