Guess we'll see how the crops handle another week of hot weather. Forecast is for 30C or higher the rest of the week. Not crazy about thunderstorms, but we sure could use some moisture.

Lack of rain leading up to this heat wave and during it up to this point where I am ( not sure what other places in the Peace are like ), every day I see the crop deteriorating as canola blooms turn sickly yellow and dry up way too premature from what is normal and in the last couple of days are seeing wheat turning white in spots across the field or large areas on some neighbors fields as I drive along and now I see peas turning yellow/brownish in areas on a field a few miles away that had been green three days back. Yesterday in Grande Prairie they had recorded 35.6c which easily broke a prior record for that day. Of course these records only go so far back but the gist is that the crops can't handle it without decent moisture.
Here is a note on the Environment Canada site for the Grande Prairie website which while true in a sense its just laughable because they put a time frame on what is normal at any time of the year, they are just ramping up the bullshit carbon narrative when the fact is it can be -40c but if its sunny it feels warmer than the actual temperature. What snow flake rocket scientist wrote this ...
MetNotes (2): A message from your forecaster
Valid: 5:30 PM MDT Thursday 18 July 2024 - 6:00 PM MDT Wednesday 24 July 2024 Did You Know? Temperature is measured in the shade so when it's hot it's even warmer than you think. Keep yourself and others, including pets, out of the full sun, especially on hot days.

We're about 4 hours south of you northernfarmer, and we too are starting to see crops suffering from this long hot dry spell. I think we probably had a little better moisture going into this weather pattern than you did, so the crops are not getting hit quite as soon. Our crops were about a week behind average maturity a month ago, but if this weather pattern keeps up for much longer we are going to be a week ahead of average! It's been a little smoky the last couple days so that should give the crops a little bit of a reprieve from the sun.
Trying to do some maintenance work on equipment to prepare for harvest, but after lunchtime that gets to be a pretty demanding task! The beginning of next week is forecast to be a little warmer yet.
Just saw a post about weather records of the past. In the 1920s there were record high temps as well. Don't think climate change or global warming people can think that far back. Wouldn't fit their narrative either!

Definitely the rain fall was sporadic in volume this spring/summer up here and rather than general systems it was smaller cells that hit some areas and missed others and that makes or breaks the situation. The last more fevent which is quite a while back, we got something like 1 tenth of an inch while Grande Prairie got over an inch, differences like that make all the difference when one is starving for moisture as we were right on the edge of a whole system. Locally I was noting hay fields that were baled up and one would swear that most of the bales must have been hauled away when in fact nothing had been hauled off, it looked that pathetic with the few round bales out there on a quarter section.
And as to the global warming bs, your right that hot weather has hit in the past and its all in a blink of an eye in the big picture earth wise but for us humans we are focused on what our lives or for some back to our grandparents as per farming as there was no farming in western Canada before that as any number of people didn't exist either. Its the "now" that we as humans are affected by weather and why its so easy for entities to manipulate our minds into believing its cause is different from what is the largest cause and that is nature on a solar system scale.
Now if I had the ability to simply print money out of thin air like the Bank of Canada to pay for my farm input bills even though the crop is wilting away, I'd be laughing too just like they are at all of us !

So far it's been about as good as one can hope for considering summer is hot. 30c is no news flash, it's what is expected. Last rain was around July 2,got 0.05" last Sunday I think so that doesn't really matter. But here it has been pretty much dead calm for a week or so and kind of hazy most days. Each morning it is 94 to 98% humidity. So while the lack of rain is not doing me any favors, at least the general climate is. As we go later in the week is when we can stick a fork in this crop year, what ever is made is what a guy gets. Looking at 35 to 37c depending on which forecast, but more importantly is the wind predicted. If we get wind gusts of any magnitude, and +30mph certainly qualifies, at that temperature level then that will shut down whatever crop is still working to create yield.
Lawn still fairly green, flax in background of picture is in full bloom.
The crop can be made in June, but will be lost in July.

Been really smoky here the last few days, feel bad for anyone with breathing problems, must be hard on them. What a switch from the last three months where it was cold wet and windy to now it’s hot muggy and dead calm. Grass is still growing crazy, needs cut about every 5 days, some of the usual spots that dry up are slowing down a bit at least. Basement has finally dried up!!!!!!

That was one thing I had failed to mention, we have had wind and strong winds some of these days along with the heat and that definitely added to the devastating effects as it was like a blast furnace in the afternoons. I see 63 km was a maximum gust on Friday, and no wonder with the heat the crops are changing every day and not for the better. There has been some hit and miss smoke but not the on going haze that can help protect from the sun.

Visibility is about a mile here from the smoke. Been hot last few days even with the smoke. Hardly a breeze either. Dew doesn’t dry off till noon and it’s wet again by 7. I’m glad we only have a couple acres of hay left to bale.

Had three tenths last night . It’s very humid and sticky . Too bad it’s dead calm because the mosquitoes ruin your plans for a productive day !! Lots of early wheat fields are ripening up fast ! Although oats still are grass green and piling on panicles from the tillers . If the oats stay standing up it will be a pretty good crop . Dead calm , haze and heavy dews is what I am seeing here . At first I seen 32-35 c last week but now I see 24-29 c for this week. If we get a breeze it will be a perfect summer day ! I heard B.C has quite a few wild fires .

Mustard is saying everything is fine, grass still fairly green so see how the week goes. The forecasted wind seems to indicate a weather change, could be some cooler air coming with it.

Lawns are getting pretty brown here. We are thankful for the smoke right now (not breathing wise, but crop wise). Smoke will reduce the intensity of the sun. We too are getting a fair bit of dew in the mornings. That is helping the crops survive in this heat. Supposed to start cooling off later this week.

Update: 1” and 2/10. Since middle of May we have received about 15”. That is a lot of rain ! I was watching that cell develop at 3 am! It was still thundering south of the farm at 7am! I had 3 tenths at farm and half inch on the 330 highway . It was a weird day ! It felt like 930 pm all day and thick sticky humidity that just tired you out . A couple hours of work and then it was scurrying into the house for a nap !! Most years this type of weather would develop into one hell of a storm !
