I need to replace the frost plugs on an old D8 14A Pony motor, the plugs are between the small engine and the large engine, only about a half inch between the engines, so I’m trying to remove the pony with the transmission and I all the bolts removed and the whole assembly is loose but it doesn’t seem to pull out of the Starter hole, I’m wondering if there’s something holding it from pulling out, it all seems free and l thought a pry bar would slide it out but no such luck.
So if anyone has an idea I’m all ears or eyes.

If you don't have any luck here I've found that SmokStak.com has some pretty good activity on older diesels.

Bet you have a bolt or two between the pup engine and cat engine. Might have to drop the stump pan to get at them. Not to mention you might have to remove the exhaust manifolds to get enough clearance for the pup engine to come out. Found easiest bush mechanic way was to chain a pipe across top of canopy with a come along or chain hoist to lift engine out. Save yourself a bunch of bother and get the kit to change it over to electric start. I changed my dads d7 3T over so can’t see why you couldn’t yours.

The starter assembly moves al around, it just doesn’t move straight out, it’s almost like there is a hook on the end grabbing the flywheel. I’ll send a small camera in there and look for bolts but it almost seems like theres way to much movement for a bolt. I do like the pup idea but I’d use it more often if I had electric start.

Dad got the changeover kit from Spence Equipment in North Battleford. Standard Cat starter and adapter that you mount into hole where flywheel is. Seems odd it’s hanging up on the flywheel like that. We pulled our pup engine twice; once to change the flywheel on it, and to changeover to electric. Ours was a 3T so obviously older than your 14A. Wish my old buddy was still alive. He knew those old dozers like the back of his hand. I might ask another friend who redone the motor in our cat this winter. He might know something but those old girls like yours takes an old school mechanic whom are getting long in the tooth or long gone.

Just thought on this one again. You might have to lift the front of the pup up while pulling forward. Might help. I kinda remember something about that

Snapper22, you were right, there was a loose bolt on the middle bracket and I was lucky enough to be able to remove the bolt through a slot in the stump pan, i was almost sure the starter gear was hanging up with the flywheel. The starter gear actually slides behind the flywheel after the big engine starts. I’ll check out an electric starter, it’s the best way to get started. Thanks snapper22 for the great advice.

CLIFF'S USED CRAWLER PARTS. Some older Cats, IH and Allis Chalmers. 780-755-2295, Edgerton, AB.
Don't know if this fellow is still going or not, used to be a great source for them old Cats. I know of a 2U and 17A both for parts complete locally but both have pup start.

I’ll toss the pup back in and start looking for electric start, so it’s here when I need it.

Then somebody was generous enough to remove the rad for me......

When Kramer cat was in business they would even order parts from Spence because they have a good line on jobbers and used.

So I am looking for advice constantly

Well I’ve got the pony back in And it all holds water, but the mag doesn’t have a constant spark, was a little moisture in the bottom of the mag so I removed it and cleared it up with break clean, if that doesn’t work I’m bolting a 2 cylinder motorcycle coil to the side of it. The joys of antique equipment.
