I actually already knew this, since I used to try every new product and technology and in recent years have simplified things a lot and really enjoyed it. But this week I learned it again.
Did most of the canola last week, left some areas that were a bit on the green side and left my trial because I had a load cell on the cart I don't trust completely and weigh wagon was not available until Tuesday of this week. Well Sunday and especially Monday of this week the wind blew really bad and I don't want to even guess how many pods dropped, it was a lot. Kind of ruined my plot too, except to say that of you get sustained 60mph wind gusts you should grow canola that lodges really bad! Everywhere the crop was standing(regardless of variety) it dropped a high amount of pods. It was a good lesson for the boys, I made sure they knew what we could have done to avoid that...but it was my fault because wind forecasts are generally pretty good.

I am slowly, very slowly , learning to not stress out as much about my crops until they are harvested. I had a quarter of canola a few years ago that I was quite stressed about, first flea beetles, then gophers and weed flushes. Ended up having to spray it a third time with Liberty because it was thinned out so bad. However, because it was set back so much, later in the summer when my other canola was starting to shut down, that field was still green and we got a nice rain and that field ended up yielding better then the other "perfect" fields!
