Has anyone used this type of plow to make unlined tile in your fields ? They claim in heavy clay the channels last 4 yearsÂ

Would you need permits for that type?

From a tile/drainage day earlier this summer. They said mole plows work but how long they last depends on soil moisture, anything too dry and they collapse quite quickly but any bit too wet and it smears into an impenetrable uneven slot. Sounds like it lasts 2yrs reliably in rrv gumbo if you can hit those ideal conditions, but starts to degrade quickly after that. An interesting concept they said is quite common in Europe is to plow in tile mains quite wide apart and then mole plow every few years on tight spacing to bring the water to those tile lines

Not exactly the same but have used rippers probably that deep and saw no benefit and boy do they like to pull up stones. Also can be a good way to get a sprayer stuck if it gets wet after doing the ripping!

Not sure how deep that mole plow would go but I would think deeper runs would last longer. It looks as if it is designed to work with a leveling system to keep it on grade so an uneven trough shouldn't be an issue. As far a smearing how would it be any different than regular tile drainage it's the same process just not putting tile in the ground. The biggest drawback I see is that if you are going to go through the trouble of dealing with everything that is associated with putting in tile you may as well put in tile and be good for many years. I have used our tile plow just to rip open the ground without putting in tile on a few occasions and on our soils it does help but we generally go 3 to 5 feet deep. If you are only going down 18 or 20 inches just hook onto the disc ripper. As stated avoid the trenches as best you can not just because of getting stuck but also to avoid collapsing the tunnel.
