Pretty sad what happened in Jasper yesterday. Not sure the extent of the damage. I'm sure we will hear more news and see pictures or video of how many buildings were burnt. All the trees left from the pine beetle infestation a few years ago were prime firewood.
We just spent a couple days at Becker's chalets a month ago. These cabins are about a 5 minute drive south of Jasper.
I think more could have been done to prevent what happened, but too many tree huggers don't have much common sense.

Yes its not only a town but one that holds a special meaning to a lot of people growing up that have gone to the park and historic buildings will be lost, never mind the people's who's life was there and their jobs. Also I would have to expect that tourism will be so limited for years to come and have to wonder what portion of our economy in Alberta is from tourism from such places. I have not heard anything detailed as to what building by building has been damaged or lost but the images I have seen so far look devastating. I wonder if places like the Whistler campground, and the various lodges south of town are even standing as I haven't heard anything about that. The mess in Jasper certainly won't help the ski resort as its so dependent on that town to service the skiers.
As one youtuber pointed out from comments of those that have lived in that town, all the dead growth ( and yes pine beetle dead trees ) that was never managed certainly never helped at all. That reminded me of quite a few years ago I was in Yosemite NP as an example and they were actively doing controlled burns right in the park beside the road and I was quite surprised by that but was how they could prevent a major forest fire from wiping out the fantastic sequoia trees and structures within the park.
I also saw a clip from four years ago where Trudeau is blabbing when he was heading to his last election about adding more fire suppression aircraft to the fleet as well as more trained fire fighters ... as always NOTHING was done on his watch and instead untold funds got funnelled to the Ukraine and some other countries for schools and bullshit while Canada instead gets millions of illegals flowing in as we turn into a have not shit hole country, or that is how I see it. Now just wait for the climate change nutters to push their agenda.

Here is the link from the town of Jasper website that lists the map and list of building addresses that are visibly destroyed or damaged in Jasper. No doubt there will be bad smoke damage in other buildings. This information is as of today July 27th, as it doesn't extend outside of the actual town I have no clue what else in the surrounding area was wiped out.
