No sunflowers or soybeans in my area, go about 15 miles south, east or west and there’s soybeans but no sunflowers really, see some in Optimally’s area. A few guys tried soybeans for a few years here but not anymore, they said they just didn’t yield good enough. Corn is grown for silage or grazing but not grain. Pretty limited to what we can grow here. Yes, lots of beans around here, some corn. I don't understand the economics of beans, I can't see much profit in them? Sunflowers used to be a lighter land crop, but those guys bought land around here and they have grown sunflowers around here too, not a lot of acres, but a few quarters here and there, they seem to do alright.

Yes , beans have under performed due to the dryness . In 22 I did produce an average of 55bpa. Canola average a bit higher that year , but I like spreading the risk out and the work load at harvest

It’s nice seeing those sunflower fields when they are in full flower, when it’s something you don’t see every day they sure stand out.

this is our best looking canola so far. 356 Seeded a couple days later then our 358 and looks far better. Most guys who have 358 in the area complained about it. reading on Twitter I’m surprised I even got a crop by seeding with a meat grinder and MRBs must be doing something wrong

Soybeans make sense when you look at all the factors like chemical rotation and weed control, harvest pressure, disease in canola from tight rotation and cereals do better after soybeans than canola. I'm probably leaving a couple out but a canola every other year rotation is not sustainable and guys are starting to find that out. With good background fertility I have seen 40+ on soybeans most years even dry ones, if it rains in August it's 50-60. Even had some fields in 2016(wet year) doing 70+ which is nuts with a 40' header at 5mph the grain cart could barely keep up! I did grow a pioneer variety once that was 30ish and have had others in my trials that underperformed, there is big differences between varieties in soybeans. Having said that my soybeans this year have been slow, that foot of snow right after seeding was not ideal.

Not very many flax fields these days, those blue fields stand out too, and look nice.

NW Iowa and surrounding areas are in tough shape. Record flooding in a large area. Pretty sad to see so many people going thru flooding . When I see those flooded towns , I think how fortunate we are in the red river valley to have spent money on flood proofing our property and towns . I don't think any amount of flood proofing would have mitigated this situation too much. Not sure how much rain the area received but it was far above any records. It's capped a dam and took out rail bridges. Sailorville lake on the outskirts of Des Moines, Iowa is projected to rise over 30'.... Des Moines got no rain from this event. There will be massive down stream flooding on Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

Herbicide spraying is all done except our corn. Crops are looking pretty good a little behind but not terrible for us. Early canola is looking like it will bolt soon.

Strange day today. Started spraying just after lunch, had a good half inch yesterday evening, figured it would be wet but when hasn’t it been this year. Finished the canola for the first go round and the field I was in was terrible. Wet everywhere and constantly having to turn around water and wet spots. Got it done then thought we’d try doing some barley expecting the same thing. I had to get water so my brother started the field, when I got back and we filled the sprayer he said it was good going, I figured he was being sarcastic. He ran to town for some chemical so I took over the sprayer. WTF! Sprayed every low spot, no water, no ruts, sprayed through all the spots I had to seed around! I couldn’t believe it, just a couple days ago there was water everywhere and it was mushy driving across it with the side by side. Figured being on canola stubble must have helped. Went to the next field that was on barley stubble, water was running across it in a few places 2-3 days ago and water in spots since the snow melted, sprayed every inch of it with pretty much no ruts at all. I can’t figure it out. I’ll take it though. Got about 300 acres of wheat to do tomorrow then just 100 of barley that still needs a few days, then just the second round over the canola next week.
One thing I noticed was anywhere the crop has been sheltered from the wind it’s way ahead of the rest of the field, makes me wonder if the wind has been doing more harm than the cold. I suppose the wind has been so cold this year the sheltered spots were a little warmer.

On Saturday afternoon I filled in a few drowned out spots and two sprayer burn out spots . I know it’s past deadlines and late but did it anyway ! in only four days I went back and was surprised to see the canola popping up! Makes me wonder why we are in a hurry to seed canola in April !

Sprayed first pass of fungicide on the wheat at flag leaf yesterday, sprayed maybe a hair early but we're over an inch of rain already this morning so glad we went. Got the Liberty sprayed on the canola which is finally cabbaging out, probably atleast a week before any bolting. Beans are also slow here, but went into our wettest fields and were seeded very late.

It sure has been a mixed-up goofy growing season thus far. Peas seeded April 25th just started to flower 4 days ago. Canola seeded may 14th is also starting to flower. Corn is ankle high to knee high and all shades of green. Still have dry beans coming up and the barley is headed. Mornings are usually only 7 to 12 degrees and daytime highs are all over, I think 17 today but last Sunday was 30ish. Lots of wind but usually not real strong but enough to make spraying a challenge. Hardly any blooms in the alfalfa and around here they usually start around the end of May. Overall crops look decent but we need to get a good stretch of nice warm weather to get things to where they should be for this time of year.

Looking at '22 pics, I think we're at about the same stage. Ended up being a pretty good year. Let's hope this year is as good.

Looking at '22 pics, I think we're at about the same stage. Ended up being a pretty good year. Let's hope this year is as good. Well thanks a lot. I had to go back and look at some pictures when you said that and the first one I came to was barley I was spraying on July 6 with a flock of ducks waddling in front of the sprayer and water everywhere in the background 😔. Most of the crops looked ahead that year except for the ones that drowned out then came back. It was not a good year.
