Have a medium duty disc I use after the breaking disc in sod and then on stubble in fall to work out ruts etc. Was thinking of putting harrows on the back but then seen some coil packers. Do they do any good behind a disc to bust the clumps up more etc like behind a cultivator or are mounted harrows a better option?

I’ve seen guys pull a packer bar behind the disc and it seemed to do a nice job. They had mounted harrows on it also.

Wasn't too many years ago we were still seeding with sweeps on cultivator and mounted harrow then a pass with harrow packer bar. I would choose harrows over packers if it was one or the other. The harrows are better at rolling lumps over and shaking out a bit of dirt. Packers just squish things down. And the packers don't have a lot of weight really so in slough ground like some broken up fox tails or grassy layer then the packer will tend to ride up onto the tallest lump and not put pressure on the lumps near by. The harrows get a shot at every lump to try and roll it or break it down some. Have to use the heaviest harrow Tine you can find, light duty ones won't do near as much.

Harrows break up lumps, smooth and also pack. Most packers aren't heavy enough to even do any packing properly. I would vote harrows.
