Just got an email say that the Parrish and Hiembecker elevator near Strathclair Manitoba will be shutting down at the end of January. Sure seems out of the blue, it’s a decent sized elevator and they seem to move a lot of grain, we move some through them and are good to deal with. Not sure why this is, says they are still selling crop inputs from the site.

That will leave a big gap between their elevators I still think of that as a fairly new set up, it doesn't seem that long ago they replaced all the steel bins?

We have some wheat to go there but now might have to haul it to Gladstone, tried to haul it a couple weeks ago but it had rusty grain beetles so we’re trying to fix that right now. Wasn’t many years ago they added those bins and I don’t think it’s much older than Minnedosa elevator, if not around the same time.

yeah, not sure if you caught the news but the P&H sasktoon just was on fire a lot today. Might force it to close up the mill for a long time too. Not sure if that'd change anything.

Dad was talking to one of their past managers that now works at a different location, he said their margins on grain have been really thin and that the elevator was in need of quite a bit of work and maintenance, also someone told me they had been trying to expand their car spot for quite some time but with no success. Not sure if I believe all those reasons, but I guess they had them.

Hauled my last load to Glossop today, bugs were all gone. A few kept their jobs but most got a severance. Too bad, a really good bunch to work with. Sounds like the biggest problem was the railroad, CP line, they only want to do the big 120 car spots and this site is 50 I think and not really anywhere to add to it. Going to leave a pretty good gap in the area. Minnedosa and Shoal Lake are Richardson, Brandon is Viterra which will soon be Bunge, and P+H in Gladstone. Not much competition. Other than Minnedosa, most of those are about an hour away by semi.

To be honest I don’t know what it feels like to drive more than half an hour to an elevator. Perhaps it’s unfair we have so many choices along the red river. I can’t even imagine driving over an hour one way for a load! I guess that’s why they call us the valley boys !!!

I thought more than a ten minute drive was too long. Used to be 3 elevators just over a 1/4 mile from the farm . Now Cargill is 3 miles from the yard as the crow flys. And 3 others less than 9 miles.

The railways have sure had a huge influence on shaping Canada, one thing for sure, they made money for themselves. A guy I was talking to said it would inconvenience the small farmers but most haul by semi so it wasn't a big deal to them, too bad for the small guys.

Same as Shmiffy here, about 5 miles to the big concrete terminal, town was 2 miles but all those little ones closed 30 years ago. Small contracts/bin cleanout I haul with the tandem but otherwise grain goes FOB farm or get some local guys to haul. I might spend $3000 a year hiring it out to go that 5 miles or a few loads going to Regina or similar distances. Owning an older semi and tridem would still likely be more expensive on a yearly basis and not as easy for family to drive at harvest. Of course going +40 miles and a lot more volume would change how the numbers work on hiring vs owning, but as a small farmer it would still likely make more sense to hire it out.
