Have been using the seeding tractor on the grain cart, only 4wd on the farm. 500hp pulling a 1100bus cart. About 100-120hrs/fall. Seems like a lot of idle hrs compared to the 150hrs in spring on the drill and working. Is it better to hour the drill tractor up or find an older tractor for the cart and smaller implements that don't need 500hp. Could pull the roller and disk with a minimum of 200hp.

You’d be 70-100g to find a decent tractor for those jobs. I have no idea what the right answer is.
How long are you planning on keeping your seeding tractor? And how many hours on it now? Makes a difference it has 1500 hours or 6000. The higher the hours the “cheaper” the hours are to put on.

Seeding tractor is a MT875C with 3800hr on it now. Planning on keeping it at least until 8-9k hrs or it starts to need work.

That's a tough call 9520deere. I know, it seems crazy that a guy is putting on almost as many hours on the cart as on the drill. Once you have a cart, you don't want to be without one either. Another tractor is more maintenance too. If you sometimes feel like you need another tractor for other jobs, I would get another tractor. Otherwise probably not. The odd time a guy runs into a good deal. That would make the decision easier.

A tractor that can pull the drill if needed isn’t a bad thing to have around. Can’t just go to town and buy or rent one these days if something major happens. We picked up another tractor this fall for that reason and planning on a bigger cart in the future also. Pull our 1000bu cart with a 933 Fendt but it’s got 7500 hours on it so you never know what could go wrong. Have our seeding tractor with PTO but the triples on it aren’t great for carting. Also hard to get used to the power shift after running an IVT on the cart

Some guys near by like the case stiegers with pto s to run a grain cart. Some have power shift. Those are a good option for rough work like carting grain, ditch work or heavy harrowing I wish versatile made more tractors in the 90s with a pto. Elmer’s says there super 7 harrows needs 6 hp per foot. It’s difficult to find a good 9380 case Steiger!
I Amin the same position . I have a half a million dollar tractor on the cart! It bugs me when the cart operator opens the door during harvest waiting for the combines to dump. I am fussy and hate the cab dusty , Smokey or have tools laying around.
Are you guys fussy as well?
A non def tractor is also nice for a second back up! Less stuff to go work.

I have used our 933 Fendt (330hp) for our 70’ Elmer’s without trouble. At 9mph
DEF is so easy to fix I don’t worry about if a tractor has it or not

Grain cart hours really add up but what are you going to do? Of course another tractor is an option but after running a newer one I really don't want to go back to an older one!
I'm pretty particular on cleanliness too. I want all the clutter out daily. Dust and dirt happen but they get spotless in the winter.

For me it’s not a race , I like to harrow like a white man!!!

Those big harrows sure do a nice job going a little faster Oatking. Those big tines need a little bit of speed to get them to vibrate to do what they are meant to do. But each to his own. You are paying the bills!
I guess with 90' you would get done way too quick if you go faster. lol

We use our planter tractor on the cart. It's kinda weird, the 8230 gets around 150 hours planting then another 200-250 on the cart. The 8360R gets maybe 70 hours a year on the valmar and wolverine. Pretty sure the old 8300 gets more hours than that on the mower and auger.
Guys have asked why we don't use the 8360R on the planter to balance out those hours a bit and the answer is simple. I prefer the 8230 and I do the planting. It's got 6200 hours or so on it and we have zero plans to get rid of it.
No good options for big tractors on cart here. We have a 9570RT and a 9570RX, neither of which I want sitting around idling all the time.

You sure your not called the “tractor people” lol Curious Calder , what is your opinion of the Cummins 9620 compared to the 13.5? A guy east of Morris had his versatile Cummins blow up and had a 70 000 dollar rebuild . Story I heard is it blew up after 60 hrs after LMS rebuilt it. It seems all the engine makes are potential problems. That engine rebuild cost really surprised me! I wonder and forgot to ask the guy if that versatile was deleted or power boosted! Enns bros told me under no circumstance should you boost the 13.5 l. Deleting is debatable . Our old service manager said do it! Lots of sales guys giving us warranty say don’t do it or it voids warranty.

Lots of sales guys giving us warranty say don’t do it or it voids warranty. Too many tractors around here if you ask me... Hahaha We had a 9530 with a 13.5, it wasn't terrible but it had a lot of nickel and dime problems. Things like turbo actuators and that blasted vari-cool fan drive. We did injectors in it too, I think it had around 5000 hours when we traded it. The S680 has a 13.5 which seems to run good. The QSX in the 9570RT has been good so far, power wise it's not much different from the 13.5, I guess a horsepower rating is a horsepower rating. We find the Cummins to be quieter though, the 13.5 has a pretty wicked knock if you run at certain RPM's that the Cummins doesn't seem to do. I've heard of them all blowing up so I don't fret too much about that. Couple years ago Seed-Ex had a quadtrac sitting on the side of the road on the rez with a hole in the block. It just toasted right there on the highway. But also saw a S680 leave GVE after an inspection, make it about 2 miles down the gravel road and a rod went through the block. So I guess it can happen to anything. I used to be an Ekotuning dealer so I'm not against power boosting at all but I personally wouldn't do it again. When things are stock it's so much easier to service them, never have to worry about a tech erasing your tune or anything. Warranty isn't much of a concern of mine, with the price of machines these days most things we buy don't have warranty, especially tractors and combines.

I quit reading after your first line.
You can never have too many tractors.
