I thought this might be an interesting topic! Everyone here knows of the coffee shop talk and know of people that like to embellish their yields or other things they have done. My area seems to have its share of these people. Same people every year have the best crops, best this, best that. For the most part it’s entertaining and good for a chuckle, but sometimes it starts to get annoying. No matter how good one guys crop is, you know the other guy will beat it, and it goes back and forth. There’s a couple people here that are obsessed with this, so I had to look it up, and they fit the description of a pathological liar to a tee. I will share some of the goodies I’ve heard over the years when I get more time. Feel free to share your stories!

Love the screenshots of the combine monitor where the yield shows twice that of the rest of the field, lol.
☺ And just in case anyone thinks I'm bsing with our yields, I always use grain cart totals and so far the grain cart has been spot on with elevator wts.😊

I guess in hindsight this comment isn't a bs story nor fitting for this thread, its sadly the fact of what a farmer was pulling over some of his land owners.
Certainly there are those that seem to have or at least claim those fantastic yields, perhaps they do but there are those that can't seem to cope with hearing others that have a good yield and have to outdo them even if it means lying ( or perhaps they feel they are not lying if they go by the highest reading on their yield monitor !. ) Local coffee shop talk although that doesn't even exist around here anymore due to no more fuel bulk station or an agro center site that interacts with clients.
But that was not what came to mind when I read your post Kevlar, its the exact opposite actually as per quite a few years ago ( in the 1980's ) there was a farmer in the area whom I ran one or the other of his tractors to do fall tillage for his farm along with a hired hand he had one fall, it was a good friend of mine that steered me his way to work for him but also my friend knew him well and found out about his little tricks. What was happening on that farm and repeatedly was the difference in yield he actually got which was average I would say vs what he told his various landlords, some of them no doubt being elderly women or those owners that were older but also had moved away to BC where its warm and could not see what was going on with crops in general up here. While he physically was getting over 30 to 35 bushels of canola per acre for example, oddly enough some of his landlords were told from him that oh it wasn't a good crop this year ... bla bla bla whatever issues he claimed to have that caused that awful yield and the yield was 5 bu per acre he told them. So lets see .... pay a 1/3 percentage or whatever percentage it was of crop for example on 35 bushel canola or .... 1/3 of 5 bushels per acre. So a completely opposite spectrum of the picture based purely on totally screwing the land owner and am sure he gladly pocketed his spoils. I can't say for sure if he would bring up yield in any big coffee shop way because he knew he was playing a game and I believe one of his landlords was trying to inquire to whomever else they knew in the area to see what yield they got as it wasn't making sense to them that its one wreck after another with the farmer renting their land.

Good post northern farmer . That happens here too with crop share ! Some guys will even park new equipment in the back yard! I like to share a bit of the wealth over the rent in really good years. Doesn’t happen all the time but least my renter is happy and he doesn’t bug me about my mustang or bikes!

Ones that get the best yields consistently don’t brag much. It’s just like what guys calves weigh in the fall. It’s all pointless without context. The guy with 750# calves in the fall probably busted his but in January calving them big mommas going through a lot more feed diesel and manpower than the April calver with 550# blacks. The guy with the 50 bushel canola year to year probably puts a lot more into it than the guy who occasionally hits the same yields. I farm a lot of variable terrain so am at peace with the fact that I will never have the consistent yields like the flatter ground will several miles away. My neighbour farms the same stuff as I and he’s more apt to bs his yields worse than what they are at coffee. I know cause the believers will come to me after and ask how bad it is up there. Flat land guys never come this way to farm anything as most don’t have enough power for the drills they pull.
Far as good bs stories there’s a couple old friends who were known to lay it on real great. The one loved to tell silly tales and he knew we knew it was mostly untrue. Worst was his boy was gullible and didn’t realize it. He got bugged a lot for spreading the nonsense. I make it a point to instil a good bs meter in my kids by telling them some of the same nonsense and that it was a tall tale.
One good bs story my great grandfather told was he was night fishing on the river and he caught something only to find it was lamp and by god it was still lit.

How about anything Trudeau says? "The budget will balance itself".

One of the most extreme yields I heard was a couple years ago. It was dry and really hot all summer, crops in my area actually turned out quite good , but if you go about 10 miles away there’s some pretty light land that needs a rain at least every couple of weeks to grow much of a crop. Was talking to one guy who likes to be on the top end of the yields and he was talking about how good his peas had done. Having never grown peas I didn’t really know what they normally yielded, so when I got home I thought I’d look up what a typical yield was. Well to my surprise, he tied the world record for peas! Good for him!!!
No, his crops weren’t that good 😂

My favourite is the cow/calf guy who never has a calf die That’s not that hard, I’ve never had a cow or calf die on me. Ever. Probably helps that I don’t have any cows or calves. And I am a cow/calf guy, I love beef! lol

When my hired man said he “was stuck a bit”! We were breaking land in piney mb and he stumbled into a wet spot . He sunk my 2375 versatile 3/4 the way up on the dual tires. ! We needed a dozer and tractor to pull it out . Whole day project, Now when he underestimates a problem I think the worst ! Like this year when he backed my new Elmer’s cart into my new Loadline end dump !!!!!

My old veterinarian told me a story that I believe to be trueish but slightly exaggerated.
He used to work for a vet in Anamosa, IA which is like the wild west in that area today. They had a client that was having trouble with getting pigs stolen from his open front shed. The client happened to be a marine sniper. So the client set up in a tree stand a few hundred yards away and when the theif came to steal a pig just as he was lifting the pig over the wall the sniper put a round through the pigs head while it was still in the theifs arms.

Kind of goes hand in hand with the crop report I heard on the radio this afternoon. Normally I tune it out but for amusement I listened. They were surprised that soybeans went up because the US crop was better than expected, but the best part was that Brazil is expecting a record soybean crop, now get this, for 2024 😂😂, even better, they’re expected to start planting the soybean crop shortly!! lol. Optimistic bunch those crop analysts.
