Not sure if there is a too late to spray, if there is I haven’t found it yet. Usually what happens is you keep the sprayer on the ready for the next available day, but that day may have passed and you don’t know it yet, then the weather spirals downhill and you’re trying to put antifreeze in it when it’s minus 20.
We occasionally soil test but often it calls for less than we put on anyway, probably been close to five years since we did some. We put everything on in the spring as a lot can happen between now and May.
Not sure I’m sold on the variable rate thing, suppose it works for some. We have quite variable land with hills and gullies but soil is pretty consistent, to cut back in one area might cut the yield as it changes from year to year what parts grow the best. Have thought about top dressing but after seeing the crop we got this year and two years ago when it literally never rained enough to be able to top dress I’ve ruled that option out. Section control would pay instantly for me.

I've learnt to keep spraying until you either run out of stuff to spray or until the risk of freezing the chem handler gets too high. Yesterday I finally ran out of stuff to spray. 😁

What do you mostly put on with the sprayer in the fall? Most of the time it's just weathermax, or Rt540 when gly was super expensive or weathermax was not available. This yr it's weathermax and express pro. Just spraying ahead of cereals this fall as most of our canola is going to be truflex so should be able to control the weeds in crop.

Just finished spraying. No herbicides. Some minerals and some biology. Not cutting out herbicides altogether but going to try and wean off some of it. Some of the biology will giver under the snow if that ever happens.

Looks like today will be the last kick at the cat to get any crop off or fall work done. There has been a lot of acres taken off around here this past week, haven’t been for a drive but don’t see much right in my area, know a few guys still combining yesterday.

Man , when I see neighbours corn still sitting out at what sounds like 90-110 bushels an acre and 6.50 a bushel it sure doesn’t sound very appealing to me to put in my rotation . Huge change from last year when some guys close by were pulling off 180 and getting paid 10 bucks a bushel. Kevlar is there corn in your area?

Tough going for those with soys still to harvest. On Off showers since about the 6th of Oct, Few days here and there to combine (16-18%) but looks like a third of acres yet to do. I'd like to get at corn but sure isn't drying. Hand shelled test ranging from 27 to 32%. Corn development sure has been slow this year.

Only corn grown here is for silage or grazing, no grain corn. When you get down off the hill here I see some sometimes, more Neepawa area and east and south from there, but even at that they don’t grow much.

Hauled some canola to Harrowby today, went up one highway and came home another and only noticed one field of standing canola still out and it had some done, so that’s a good sign, hopefully guys have gotten most crops off.

My brother has been hauling corn since we started combining about ten days ago and talking to other drivers while waiting to unload it sounds like there is a lot of corn to still to be harvested. Not sure why but ours seems to be stuck at around 20% moisture and everyone else's is down around 15. Still a fair amount of beets to dig as well. This rain and snow have made a mess of things need 4×4 to drive in the fields and even then you kinda just aim and giver and hope you make it. The cows are not happy either, can still see green stuff to eat but would rather push through fences and get into the haystack.

Typical cows. If they were half as hungry as they thought they were they'd be dead.

Fall time they want to be lazy and be fed. Spring time they want to break out to eat any blade of grass they can. Green or dried up.
Our cows have been out on stubble for the past week eating regrowth wheat and barley. There is just over 1000 acres of stubble along with a bunch of sloughs and creeks to graze on. If it doesn’t snow they should last till we move them on to the corn in a couple weeks.

made the 8 hour combine drive home from my farthest customer today, thankfully uneventfull and just beat the snow. one extra phone call turned this year from a pretty bleak harvest to a very good one, feeling thankful. Was harvesting some of the last fields before hecla island and the crop was unbelievable up there. one oats field had been done with a 23ft swath and the straw out the back was more then any 40ft ive done before. Still a bit of crop left standing up there but the harvest window is so short this time of year when I finished what id committed to I figured I was about ready to be home again.

Finally got back to combining corn yesterday after a 9 day break. Wasn't cold enough to go with the snow on the plants and yesterday it finally warmed up to plus 4 with a light breeze and the snow melted. Field is a mess and no grain cart so pulling trucks. Corn is tough and can only get the combine up to around 3000bph at 100% engine load. Supposed to snow again starting tommorow evening so trying to get going. Less than 300 acres to go but at this rate it is going to take a while.
