My new to me 4720 jd sprayer doesnt have auto height control and so I was thinking of putting on boom gage wheels to protect the outer boom sections. It looks like the prior farmer hit the ground a few times because of frame welds and numerous broken nozzles in the tool box.
Does auto height respond fast enough at high speeds thru ditches? Is it wise to have both auto height and touch down gage wheels on the booms. I ordered gage wheels thru Enns bros. I had the choice of manually or the hydraulic option. I chose the manually system for now. They are still in a box in my shop.
Is it worth the money for gage wheels? Will the boom crack anyways when the wheels hit the ground abruptly? Is the extra weight on the 100ft booms a concern?
What brand name of boom gage wheel is preferred? is auto height a perfect system? Thanks for any insight to this issue.

Auto height on my 1396 rogator is definitely not a perfect system. Fine on flat ground but if you have pivot tracks, washouts, or blow holes, keep your hand on the switches. My brother has a newholland and has the same issues, can't speak to the jd. I would not run without touch down wheels, even with them I end up breaking nozzles occasionally. Mostly because the boom height hydraulics on the rogator are stupidity slow and unless I slow down or raise the boom tips 10 foot into the air well in advance they do slap on the ground.

We have an older raven boom height control on our millar front boom sprayer. It’s not perfect but it’s far better than nothing at all. Have had some wires get disconnected then you have to shut it off and it’s not much fun at all.
I still lift the booms on hills and a few water ditches but 90% of the time it will look after itself on our land. I have never used training wheels on a sprayer but there are guys around that have the wheels and height control on the sprayers.

Have a couple years experience with the 4730 now. It has auto boom and while it does it's job really well across most of our fields it still isn't fast enough for quick changes in terrain. I too have never tried the training wheels but I think they might force you to keep your booms just a little too high for proper coverage.
