I may have mentioned this technique of filling an air carry tank before but if not I thought I would put it on the forum along with a photo so its an easy visual of what it is and its been a very simple and handy item. It was probably back in the 1980's when it struck me after filling the carry tank numerous times sitting there with an air chuck filling the tank from the shop compressor and how painful and slow it is, I never had a clip on tire chuck back then and the one I have now won't stay on a fill stem when the pressure is high anyway. Also if one had a larger tank from lets say a crapped out compressor and the tank is still ok or using a 100 lb propane bottle for the same purpose and can throw it in the back of a pickup to fill a tire in the yard or the field ( if one doesn't have a gas engine portable compressor ). All it requires is to have a female air coupler on the end of your shop compressor hose and everyone does, and a coupler on the end of the hose for the portable air tank. I chose a 1/2 ball valve for the reason that there is more to it to hang onto and it puts the ball valve handle further away from the center line so that the handle won't hit the female air coupler body. I use brass bushings ( and they wont rust ) to reduce it to what I need, in this case I am only using 1/4 body size M style couplers with 1/4 pipe thread but have another one rigged up with 3/8 body size. It can have one style male plug on one end and another style on the other end if that suits the situation. I also use this one as a high capacity blow gun sometimes and set the ball valve for how much flow I need. Does this method ever fill a small carry tank fast, filled to the compressor pressure within seconds ( this is assuming your carry tank is rated for the pressure the shop compressor puts out or has a safety valve on the carry tank ). If the compressor needs to run to fill the tank completely, let it do its thing and come back to it when its ready. The only trick is with this simple device, to remember to close the valve before coupling to a tank with pressure .. and to close the valve again before disconnecting the female couplers after the tank is filled. You only have to forget that once or twice before it trains your brain to not forget that step, that sure wakes person up when air is blasting out the valve unintentionally !
