What new varieties of barley have you tried? I’m looking at trying something new, have had really good luck with Conlon but with last year being what it was, we don’t have any worth cleaning for seed. We have some seed left over from last year but it won’t be enough and I’ll have to do a germ and vigour test to see if it’s even any good.
Have tried a few different varieties over the years and they were ok but never as good of quality as Conlon and always had more diseases. I really have no interest in trying for malt so want a good quality feed variety that isn’t prone to disease or other issues. Is there any new varieties that you can keep for your own seed or are most going the plant breeders rights?

I was thinking there might be an increase in barley acres this year. I seen MASC crop prices and barley was valued over 6 bucks a bushel. Oats was only 4.97. The canola price surprised me at over 19 bucks a bushel. Soybeans came in at 16 and a bit and wheat was in the 10.6 range. Check your masc login for the exact prices.
Judging on the level of protection given to canola values we might see a big spike in canola acres. Just by doing the math if your 80% coverage is 35 and times that by 19 bucks ......your looking at 665 dolars an acre coverage in a disaster case. I think most guys can grow a decent crop for 465 dollars an acre without not too many equipment added on to that cost of production. Your ahead 200 bucks in a drought or washout.
Also new for this year is you can submit higher priced contracts to crop insurance for most crops in case there price is below yours. I will be submitting my 100 bushel an acre oat contract for 6.00 bucks to the masc for better insurance coverage.
All the cereal crops looked like poor coverage but barley looked better than oats or wheat.
Has sask or aberta crop insurance come out with any coverage yet?
I dont know if canola will get back to 20 dollars so least you are insured and you will live to see another round!!

Have any of you ever grown Canmore barley? It looks decent from what I’ve read but seems hard to find seed for some reason. Going to try some Connect this year as well as our reliable standby, Conlon.

Heard guys being pretty happy with Esma. Not sure what availability is. Also not sure if the disease package is up to Manitoba conditions.

That’s my biggest concern with trying new barley varieties, if the disease package isn’t up to the task it’s not worth growing. If I have to spray it nonstop for disease I won’t even consider it. That’s the big selling point for Conlon and why we’ve grown it for so many years, never spray it and vomi is pretty much zero every year. Grew Brahma one year and it turned out good but the vomi was through the roof and the Conlon that year was.05. We sell to hog barns so vomi is a huge issue for us.

We’ve grown that in the past, yielded about the same as Conlon but seemed to get more disease and usually a little higher vomi. Also didn’t seem to look as nice, I know for feed that doesn’t really matter much, but when guys are paying a decent price it does come into play. Usually a pound or two lighter on bushel weight as well.

Our austonson barley had the high score for weight at the elevator this fall. Just over 58lbs. Haven’t had any vomi issues with it when we have grown it the last few years. But we have a lot different weather then Manitoba.

Our Austenson was around 58 too. What I cleaned for seed weighs 60. Durango is a new one that's supposed to be better than Austenson for disease with a bigger kernel and a bit better lodging resistance.
