Consider this more of a public awareness announcement.
My Purchase and Acquisition License expired a few weeks back. In my usual fashion I called up a government body to ask why didn't get a renewal notice and they told me I had already reapplied in July and they had received everything and passed it on for approval. So 5 months later and I am basically now a criminal. I was thinking of picking up a 22LR for the heck of it but obviously can't now.
Spoke to a few other people since becoming aware of this situation and learn it's actually quite common.
So I don't know if you want to do a renewal app well before hand. But would say if you are thinking of making any purchases then don't leave them on the back burner and think you can do it after you renew your Pal.

So I gather they claim they didn't send you a notice because their records show you have reapplied months ago, when in fact you have not. So is that a human screwup on their part or a computer one, or a deliberate one or did I misunderstand and you had actually sent in a renewal back in the summer ?
I received a renewal notice some time ago and I had elected to do it online which seems to have bit me because a month later they send me an email declaring that they rejected my photo so I now must send another photo. I only have a hunch as to what is going on as there is no way I can prove when that photo was taken and they can then claim anything so I had one taken again at the AMA that is again "official" and stamped on the back as to the date taken and then called them to find out the procedure and indeed they want that new photo physically mailed to them with my signature on the back as well as the official date the AMA stamped on it. She went through a bunch of questions which seemed needless as after all I just had to send them a new photo by mail, one of those questions was "Do you possess any restricted or prohibitive weapons". While my answer was very prompt, short and accurate ( or at least accurate as of up to now ), I really had to wonder why they would feel compelled to ask such a question when it was clearly answered on the initial form I sent them by email, are they trying to trick applicants who call in and get them to stumble ?. I was not impressed although didn't voice my being pissed off at the government extreme over reach in freedoms we should have but don't and taking more away all the time. So will I eventually get my renewed PAL, that is a good question. They had a deadline on the request of new photo being sent as after that date the PAL is no longer valid which to me more than likely means having to take the course all over again and what insanity will they have in store for that or anyone taking the course in the future. I have zero trust in anything that is going on as they are hell bent to round up all arms period sooner or later.

I actually don't remember what transpired but since they have a record of my renewal application then no doubt I got a notice in July and promptly did all the steps needed to get my renewal processed. I don't remember getting a photo done but must have. No one has contacted me in any fashion to tell me I am missing some information or whatever. The gal I talked with this week said there is nothing I need to do on my end. Just sit and wait with an expired Pal.
Interesting thing about questions asked is related to a conversation also this week about Pal and got talking about being pulled over and asked if you were drinking. If you answer yes at all, even to say you had one drink 6 hours ago, you are admitting guilt and opening the door for further legal action. Breathalyzer being the most obvious. If you don't say you were drinking then they have to establish a cause for suspicion. Therefore the question on restricted firearms would fall along same lines, basically a question to see if the responder will open themselves to further action. Maybe a guy has some unregistered guns at home and thinks, hey no big deal, I will say so now. You just then admitted guilt and opened yourself up to further action. If you simply said no then no one would likely come knocking. If they never ask a question because your file says you have no restricted guns or whatever then they never have the possibility to open the door initially.
Myself, if I had two beer and got pulled over I would say so. I don't mind blowing, big deal. If you had 4 then best to say you had none. But answering questions about firearms is probably where you need to pay close attention because we are all criminals in the mind of some, even legal gun owners are simply criminals not yet within their reach.

Manitoba sounds lovely... in Albertistan they don't need suspicion to pull out the breathalyzer anymore. I went through a checkstop last summer, 7:00pm on a wednesday night, that they were making every person through it stop and provide a breath sample

I assume the side arm aspect of the sears catalog was geared towards US citizens and not Canadians but otherwise I imagine farmers that had access to a location where the products could be shipped to were picking up all sorts of items farm or house hold related back in the day including ammo or long arms from Sears.

Article takes a valid view of the data. A similar valid view is how does removing guns from legal gun owners solve the situation of all the gun related deaths in the big cities. I mean, if the "experts" are correct in their desire to disarm citizens then the murder rate in rural areas should be off the charts. Higher concentration of guns in rural areas must equal higher gun related murders.
But I don't think the experts have the data to back up their conclusions that ending legal gun ownership is the solution.
And that would of course lead to the obvious question: if the analysis and conclusions are wrong but the same policy is driven incessantly by government and media, then what is the actual purpose.
Also, I still don't have my PAL. Yes, I have considered picking up the phone and finding out who I need to find to get a simple piece of paper processed in 60 seconds but I suspect the same system that in 9 months overdue also is set up to purposely delay further any such questions as to why they can't do their simple tasks. After all, the brilliant reason for it being 3 months overdue in fall was "covid".

Has anyone tried getting their restricted? Not sure what is going on with that as it seems they have to redo a bunch of stuff in the legislation.

I got my restricted PAL. Took the course and exams last April. 2 weeks after that we had the big handgun freeze announcement. I all ready had my non restricted, and the course teacher said it shouldn't take long for them to send my restricted. It arrived sometime in June.

Got my license in the mail about two weeks ago. The government had called the wife about 6 weeks previously because she had not signed the renewal form that I submitted so they needed to confirm with her via a phone call. So no doubt my mistake for giving a government agency an opening that will take 12 months for them to resolve. I suppose I can delay my income tax filing for quite some time since "covid" should be holding up that part of the government operations also.

One item missing from the form and no doubt that gets thrown on the eventually get around to it pile vs them taking action and informing the applicant. Had you been given a heads up of this error long ago it would have been resolved. In any event its good to hear they did clear it up and that PAL's are being issued.

I guess we have to expect these delays because of covid. But apparently working for the tax agency makes everything immune to covid. Within about 4 weeks of tax filing the CRA has issued a notice that they have questions about claiming one of the kids as a dependent.
Seems what ever the tax arm of government has done to beat covid, the government should apply to all other areas.
It's another one of life's mysteries where you scratch your head wondering why something can be fixed one place yet the exact same solution can't be applied to the exact same situation elsewhere. Oh well, I guess we just chalk it to government being really, really bad at what they do. Same as always.

That's a good heads-up! Renew your PAL well in advance, and don't delay important purchases. Thanks for sharing this reminder.
