Recently acquired a new to us 3320 qda Bourgault Current setup was 2” opener and 4.5” round packer. Our previous drill setup was 5710 with 3/4” points and 3.5” steel packers which worked well for us but it was time to upgrade and new drill is a bit wider.
Main question is about opener choice which is going to be between 3/4” and the 1” bullnose opener and packer tires which I am in between the 4.5” V packer or the new 5.0” VU packer tire. Our land is loam with some areas a bit sandy and we do have some rocks as well. We do have some wet conditions for seeding some years but not always.
Just learned about the VU packer today from Bourgault rep. It is a V style that is slightly more rounded to avoid overpacking which has been something I have seen with the 4.5” V. For that reason I am slightly leaning toward the newer style wheel even tho it is $15 US more per tire from our dealer. Opener choice, by far almost all of the pars links in our area use the 3/4 points but to me that doesn’t really matter if the 1” would do a better job which I have read in some threads. Looking to get opinions and thoughts.
Raise barley peas wheat durum soybeans and canola. MRB used as well

Perhaps you have read my input on other threads advocating 1", if not I'll try and do a refresher here. I have run several independent hoe drills with the 1" and always had good luck, both with a round and V packer. Early on I tried some 3/4" next to the 1" and felt the 1" was more consistent in my clay-loam soil. Since the 1" is more vertical I feel it pushes a bit of a wall of dirt and definitely moves more dirt and flow around sides is more consistent. I suspect there is less wear on the 1" because of the dirt pushing dirt instead of the angled opener slicing through. That is only a guess though, but I know my 1" openers have wore really well over the years. I also feel the 1" moves just the right amount of dirt to make a good furrow and put a dirt cap on the midrow band when on 10" spacing.
I bought a used 3320 myself recently and swapped the 3" tips out for 1" myself, it has the round packer option.

What’s supply like to get new packers?
On our land I like the 3/4” opener with the v packer. I think the seed placement is better with v packer compared to a round as it follows in the seed trench better. Over packing can be a problem in the wrong conditions but generally not a problem for us.

I'll just keep the round packers. If I was in a super arid area and wanted max on-row pressure I might consider changing.

I also just bought a 3320 QDA and I am wondering what packers and 3/4 or 1 inch tips are worth. I usually bought Bourgault 8810 parts through Nelson motors John Deere but maybe there are cheaper places?

I stopped into a dealer in North Dakota a few days ago and asked the price of the V packer and they told me $96 usd, I think we paid around $60 last spring.

I paid about $97 apiece for the 1" tips after getting a discount for buying a bunch of parts. Not sure what 3/4" is. Ask if they have a early booking discount or a sale going, they can move a bit on pricing.

Ended up ordering a set of 5” VU packers today. We will see how they look when they get here. Supposed to last longer than the 4.5” V style as well so we will see. Still undecided on opener choice just yet. I am leaning towards the 1” but 3/4” may still happen. Right at $90 US for each packer after discount for buying entire set.
