No it’s not 5 minutes to 6 …….. it’s converting a 5 bat reel to a 6 bat reel on a D140.
It should be very easy to do as it’s just two complete reel pipes with fingers, mounting plates, bucket of bolts & nuts ……. then the 6 bat reel ends.
Why? You ask. As someone who uses a 9 bat reel on my D65 7.5mt rice draper …… the benefits are massive in these conditions where there’s high loading, sometimes lodged crop & therefore, difficult feeding. Basically, more bats in the crop take a smaller “bite” ….. but more often …… which aids better & more even feeding off the cutter bar & into the feeder house etc. etc.etc.
So the logic has to be the same for 5 to 6 on a D140 in cereals, pulses & canola. There’s 20% more bats to make the “bites” smaller & less pulses through the machine. Anyone done this so far?

I've heard of it being done, but never ran one and honestly never seen one in this area on a Macdon. Both my Claas and Honeybee heads had 6 bat and I agree it helps in tough conditions.
I wonder what the cost is for the parts? I wouldn't call it easy though, basically have to re-space every bat but one on the reel.

I ordered my FD75 with a 6 bat reel and it does work very well. Before next harvest we plan to convert our FD70 to a 6 bat reel. Will require mounting the new bat and then moving the existing bats to new mount positions. Shouldn't be too bad. I've pulled the bats off of a D60 swather header before to put steel teeth on. It's pretty easy.

Here’s a 9 bat reel on a D65 7.6mt in rice. You’ll appreciate how well they work via video in tough conditions by the even feed they produce……. If I could add video here !!!

A bigger diametre reel was the thought for down rice about 30 years ago however, yes bigger diametre does provide a longer sweep but the size of the “bite” it can take is a major problem for “pulse feeding” & it adds huge stresses on every component of the reel. I personally haven’t seen any better than a 9 bat MacDon that is setup properly for the rice conditions it’s confronting.

probably atleast 2k? i would guess. ive seen a neighbor's d50 swather has six bat but thats the only one I doubt if $2k would even buy the two bars let alone the fingers, mountings, drives, 12 new end supports & a squillion torx bolts!

Is there a reason macdon went away from staggering their 2 price reel? I always thought that made more sense
