We have a 2016 CR 8.9 and had what could have been a very dangerous situation with it a few days ago. My brother had the side panel up and was in doing something on the concave, it was a windy day, I had just been there giving him a hand but he didn’t need me so I was walking across the yard to the truck when I heard a bang and then he started yelling for help. I ran back and the wind had blown the panel down pinning him in behind the wheel by the concaves. When I opened it up, he said he thought it had stabbed through him, but when he pulled up his shirt it had just scraped off a chunk of skin about the size of my palm. He was pretty sore with his neck, shoulder and back all hurt, he finished up the last day of harvest but had to go to the chiropractor Thursday afternoon, I told him to take a few days off.
This kind of thing could have been a lot worse, even fatal, just a day before that he said something didn’t sound right so I was having a look under there when he had it running. Had it come down then I would have been slammed right into the turning belts. For some reason there is no safety lock on these side panels, all other New Holland we’ve had did, this just has a couple cheap Princess Auto hydraulic cylinders holding it up. Is this another one of their stupid cost saving ideas? Seems dumb you can’t even stretch your legs in the cab without everything shutting down, but then they stop putting a safety lock on a 500 pound panel that can come down on you. It doesn’t look like anything has been removed. Does anyone have a machine around this age or newer? Does it have a lock on it?

My Case 8230 is the same. There's locks to keep them from opening but nothing closing. My fear is when they are open the wind will twist or pull them off the combine. They are not cheap to replace. Had to do a back one when the rear tire spindle snapped on the fan side and it was close to 11k for just the panel.

Its too bad the equipment engineers failed to realize that hazard. Wind the wind decides to close an object it can be like a knife slicing thru soft butter. Good thing he was not knocked out or hurt worse. I wonder how many guys bother to lock them closed. Usually for highway transport I think. A safety latch is so cheap to put on a cylinder. My pete hood locks up as soon as you open it. Not sure how many times I growled when I tried closing the hood when the lock was out. Good reason for the lock up hood cylinder I wreck in!

Those side panels closing has crossed my mind. Wind direction is key. Are the shocks getting alittle weak?
My kw doesn’t have a hood latch. I never open the hood when facing into the wind. I worry that if it died when facing into the wind.

I never thought of this. I'm religious about blocking things up and using safety stops when working under things but those panels never crossed my mind.

I worry that if it died when facing into the wind. They could be, I know the other side comes down easier than the side that came down on my brother. I looked at the arm that holds the panel, it shouldn’t be hard to make a safety latch that locks on its own when lifted then has to be manually unlocked. I still can’t grasp their logic with this setup, our previous machines had a good lock that you could literally hang on it and not close it to one only held up by shocks. Talked to my brother today, sounds like his back is still pretty bad, I think he’ll be out of action for the rest of the year.

the older crs have the best locking system, but its gone on my 8090 too. ive had an s series jd slam on me too, and that was with using their saftey lock which is just a friction lock tab on the shock

Hard to believe this day and age this issue is not already addressed. Holy I have so many light chains with yellow clips hanging off my pto shafts, I dont know what to do with them all. I think pto safety is way over done now and other items not addressed. case in point . If a hood lock is present on newer trucks , the combines should have one. This is a warranty safety issue. Must be really tough for your brother. Hope his discs are not damaged along his back. rest is good now.

Our CX 8080 was a 2013 and had the lock, so either in the three years they stopped making them with locks, or possibly made at different places?

Seems funny our 2013 CX had the lock but your 2013 CR doesn’t. Wonder why? Surely it’s not an option?

Belgium built CX compared to a grand island CR.

Thought I’d update this thread. Kind of forgot about this problem until I ran out of time to make something that looks somewhat professional. After trying to figure out a way that I wanted to make a safety latch, I decided it was going to have to be more complex than I had time for, so this was what I came up with instead. Not fancy but a lot better than getting crushed to death by the side panel. Before any of you go out and think about making one of your own, just so you know I have a patent on it.😝

Our machines have nothing. Since you have the "Patent" I guess I will have to design something anew. Thanks for the reminder.
