Came across this Amish guy fighting with the USDA about selling beef directly to a membership. USDA wants it to be inspected and I don't really think that is much of an issue, but where do they draw the line with other farm products. I have sold beef, eggs, and hay directly to people. Eggs don't have to be inspected or even marked uninspected unless you sell over a certain amount. Again how is anyone really going to know how many you sell, it is cash. With the beef, the animal is sold live and the guy deals with the butcher, no need for an inspection unless he plans on selling the cut and wrapped products. I have seen guys sitting on the side of the highway selling jerky and other meat products, none of those are inspected. And with farmers markets and direct to consumer becoming all the rage at what point does a guy want to start dealing with the federal government? www.thelancasterpatriot.com/millers-organic-farm-fighting-for-s

I think it is up to the consumer to evaluate the meat or other produce or develop a relationship with the grower to assure good product. My best meat was bought directly from a farmer we know and a reliable butcher shop in town. Being informed is really important and you cant take that for granted. Meat at superstore is inspected yet can still taste horrible or have diseases.

If it’s a licensed butcher they will be inspected.
