Pricing out a 30k bin for next year. Talked to Wentworth about GSI and Valley Agro for Brock. I'm 2mi from both Penner Farm Service and our local Co-op, so Sukup and Westeel are close by but haven't gotten any pricing back. Brock and GSI are very similar in price. What are guys experiences with the different brands and retailers? What options are a must? This will be our first bin bigger than our yellow top Westeels so any other advice would also be welcome.

We have three GSI's and three Brocks, although the Brock's are older and a bit smaller. Two 16,000's put up in 1992 and a 20,000 put up in 2004 I think. The GSI's are two 30,000's and a 40,000. The 30's are about 13 years old and the 40 was put up last year. No real difference between any of them to speak of. Wentworth has been good and if we were putting another one up that's probably what we would get.
No experience with others. Only options I can think of are temp/moisture cables and one of those crust buster things over the center hole.

I Agree with Calder, also buy a springland unload system. I have norstar bin unloads and wished I paid a few more bucks for the springload. Norstars are slow, rust, gears can jam up. If you buy norstar always open up and clean the gear mechanism often. The gear mechanism also freezes up. Brock bins have been really good and have a good floor system. Lids are not the greatest but I have yet to see a well built bin lid! Usually fails when its needed the most. stairway ladder a must. tilt the unloads to a 45 degree angle so it gives more room to blow snow. When you build the concrete have at least 18 inches of concrete from the edge of bin to edge of concrete. Sometimes cheaping out and going 5 inches makes it hard for the bin guys to set up a bin or in case it slides in the wind during setup.

I can't comment much on Brock or GSI, other than to say that I dealt with both Valley Agro and Wentworth 4 years ago when doing an expansion and Wentworth seemed to be more inclined to keep costs down than Valley Agro. Ended up dealing with Penner Farm Service because that's the dryer I wanted, and they exceeded my expectations. What we pulled off in three months still makes me wonder how it happened. Other than having to re-tighten several set screws on sprockets and a leg that never hit it's rated capacity I have been happy with the Sukup stuff, they are stiffened bins and I even unloaded one 60K bin out the door because of a corn lump over the center unload! I have yards full of Westeel Wide Core bins too and they are nice bins, although after seeing a lot of pictures of scrunched Westeel bins I wonder if they are a bit weak in the roof area or maybe just more common locally. They are easy to build until the sheets get heavy at ring 7 or 8...
But bins have seemingly gone nuts with steel prices lately, the quotes might tell the story these days. Having a good set-up crew is important.

After hitting my head really hard on the way out the bin door the other day, might be a consideration which bin has easier entrance and exit. Sweep was almost around and I was in a hurry to shut off the motor, got to thinking if I had knocked myself out I would have been wishing I had installed all those sweep-stops that are sitting on a pallet in the back of the shed...

I know what you mean swman about wanting to shut the motor off. My norstar unloads bounce something fierce if they run empty and I tend to rush to shut the drag off.
