Been fighting this problem for a year or 2 been, i got a 2002 IH 9900 with a 60 series Detroit in it been a good truck for over 10 yrs now it goin down the highway it cuts out like engine just quits producing power still traveling at 100 km/hr let off the throttle and push it down again it comes to life and keeps pulling, it may do it again right away or again in 4 miles you never know, check engine and stop engine lights only come on when the engine has cut out and go out when its alive again, had a local shop read the codes and nothing was stored in comuter, I've chased all ground, replaced all batteries thought i had it for a few trips but then started doing it again, throttle position sensor etc.
Now I'm pointing at the ECM after 20 yrs of rough roads and fields I'm wondering if its starting to shake apart, truck still runs and idles fine i used it last harvest from field to yard but afraid to take it down the highway as i worry it might totally die
has anyone dug into one either fixing themselves or recommend a good shop to check it out and possibly replace i'm in WC Sask

We had an ECM go out on our Kenworth one time, same thing, it would just die but then start up right away, never did it often, until it just completely died and wouldn’t start, the check engine light would go on and off regularly, but it also had a few other wiring gremlins at that time that we gradually sorted out. The fact that it’s not showing any codes makes me believe that is your problem, ours didn’t either, even after it completely died. There is a thousand other sensors and wires that could be causing your problem, but I would think something would show up on a scan? This could be a chance for you to upgrade your ECM, we went from a DDEC 3 to a DDEC 5 as there were no 3 available, gained a few ponies and could have went higher but I didn’t want to max it out for what the engine was spec’d. It’s frustrating with intermittent issues like that, makes a guy leery to drive it.

Can't help on a shop. I have a 2004 in a freightshaker, and from what I have been told is if your check engine comes on and it derates with no codes ecm is NFG. I lucked out and it was just my coolant level sensor was screwed. If you want to try and fix it yourself you could try baking it at 375f. Take all the plastic connectors off first tough. If you have a rework station that would be my first step before sending it off and much better than the wife's oven. I have never tried the oven method so use your judgment. Sometimes solders fail because of vibrations and running it through a rework station will sometimes fix it.

Kevlar- were you driving the truck when it would die or just sitting idling and die?
I think if i tried the oven method I'd probably have a hunk of melted crap, might just pull the trigger on a new one or reman one i guess, probably cost more than the truck is worth but cant afford a newer truck either
were you able to just take the ecm off the block and take it in and they program it and stick it back on and roll or take the truck in? I'm not looking to tune it or anything just have my settings on a new one
i know my truck has the auto shut off for the coolant sensor and the idle to long thing taken off shortly after i got the truck
gonna phone around tomorrow before I tear into things

Should be able to take ecm off and get a reman with all your settings on it. Not sure if there is anyplace in Canada that does it but there are a few in the states. We had the one on our N14 go bad a few years ago but couldn’t wait to send it away so just got a reman from Cummins as new aren’t available anymore.
A wrecker might have the ecm and then you could take it to the Detroit dealer and get your settings transferred I’m sure.

I can’t remember exactly how it all went down, but I remember for sure it shut off at idle a few times, and pretty sure it did while driving as well, was driving when it died completely, I remember the tow truck bill 🤮. I just took it to a local shop and they did whatever it was they had to do, I don’t remember all the specifics. Sorry I can’t help much, it’s going back a few years now, we still have the truck, ‘96 Kenworth that we put a box on, it’s run great ever since.

Do you have the shutdown override switch Kevlar? Just curious, I have never had to use it thankfully.

I think it does, I’ve never used it 🤷♂️. Does that override any reason it shuts down? I’ve had some of the shut downs turned off, like the idle and the low coolant. That one was stupid , the sensor was on one side of the rad so any time you were on a tilt the other way it would shut off. Guess they weren’t meant for off roading.

I sent my ECM from my M11 Cummins to Midwest ECM . I believe they are in Colorado. I paid around $900 US and I had to send mine in. I had to supply them with some transmission and tire size info plus they took info off of mine and put it onto a refurbished one. Turn around time was quick.

2005 wires coming off the ecm were crap. I was in winnicott stoon. a guy had 23 splices in the first couple feet of the harness. Truck was just over a year old.
