I've never fungicides oats although I don't always grow them either. The heads are just about to emerge on my oats. They are on well drained, mostly lighter ground. Hasn't rained much in the last week or so and there has been lots of wind this past week. I'm questioning the need to fungicide although I know some that fungicide regardless of conditions. I don't like to fungicide just because "the crop looks good". To me that's like giving your kids antibiotics just because they look healthy. Looking for others experience or advice on this. Thanks.

What area do you farm from. That can make a difference. What is your yield potential. At 6.75 a bushel and over a hundred bushel an acre possible yield I think it is worth the investment. Usually a fungicide is not known until after the fact and than it is too late. Be proactive and protect your crop. This year may be a once and a lifetime chance to get 6.50 -7 bucks a bushel. Because my oats are behind growth because of flooding I will be putting pivot on . Its a no brainer since rust blows up later in the season in the red river valley.

I think applying fungicide also prolongs the flowering stage. This in turn makes the kernels bigger giving you a higher yield.

I farm basically straight west of you Oat King. I have one field up on the escarpment and one field below on Almissippi sand.

Some guys feel even a wet dew can be a reason to spray. Good to take a look at the 2 week forecast. Right now it costs 2 bushels an acre to spray a fungicide. So if you look at it in a percent basis your fungicide represents 2 percent of your gross bushels. All the fungicide has to do is earn you that back. Not much compared to other inputs! In my career I have seen rust take out half an Oat crop back in the nineties. Not something to take lightly eh.

Thanks for all the input. What is the best staging to hit it at? And is it too late if it goes fully into head?

Penultimate leaf is the big yield maker on oats I believe, so you are probably there and then some. Definitely want to protect that leaf.
I used to spray my oats twice with fungicide and once with growth regulator. Haven't grown it in a couple years, trucker is much happier with wheat. Obviously I was fertilizing for the big crop and didn't want to skimp, but every trial I have done with fungicide on cereals paid off.
