Looking at possible extending my John Deere sprayer with an aluminum boom since my new to me sprayer had some welded areas on the steel boom.
Any body have experience replacing the booms and what company did you buy from, how much work is install and how much did project cost. I hear you can extend your width with less weight which puts less strain on your sprayer hydraulics.
Thanks for any help.

One person I can think of to ask would be ltk on this forum or known as Licenced To Kill on the other forum. He has not been on this forum since last fall ( you may recall what took place ) but that would be a person to ask as he was and may still be selling them as well and they are made somewhere in the USA. The wide aluminum boom system is to replace the factory JD system as I think he runs a 4830. I think the boom he uses is 125 feet but I think they can be custom made give or take width wise as well. He runs one anyway on his JD and has talked about them in the past.

I ran aluminum booms on my last sprayer, KNS I do believe was the manufacture. I thought they were junk flimsy and flop around on corners, and uneven terrain. Eventually they started stress cracking from the above, well I can weld metal but aluminum is not quit the same beast. Had a welder friend come and fix them up one spring and he can weld. They still kept cracking along the welds and even broke a pivot knuckle right off. Now run a R series with steel booms and haven’t had any troubles. Wouldn’t consider going back to them. I think the weight savings is minimum.

Thanks farmer cook, Good advise about the welding. Besides having nicely sloped ditches what is causes the stress fractures on the outer most booms. If a guy slows down for un even terrain shouldnt that be enough to protect your booms. I am new to the john deere sprayers so please mind my questions.

Years ago local ag retailer bought a new Patriot with aluminum booms. They were junk, replaced them with steel by the third season. If I recall weight savings was negligible.

You could try these guys, heard good things but pricey. www.boydag.com/I know two guys that had aluminum, they are nice until stress cracks show or that tree jumps out in front of you. When they traded the sprayers off they went back to steel. Nice thing about steel is most guys have enough scrap steel to do a quick butcher patch and keep going. I have next to nothing for aluminum to patch up and go, not to mention I can't weld it up in the field.

I have a set of Pommier booms on my Rogator, They are around 110,000 acres now and no cracks/no problems. The only thing I really don't care for is they take special fittings for the plumbing.
