So have a bad cutworm problem in canola and it’s my first time I’ve ever needed to spray them. Using matador but do the worms actually have to be out of the ground feeding, ready to go but can’t find any out and about yet this evening, what is others experience on this

I've had to spray once. As late as you can still see or even in the dark. You'll see the birds out the next day picking up the dead worms. Used matador too.

I have only sprayed twice for customers with cutworms. Matador is contact and stomach only, you need something that is systematic such as cygon although I don't believe it is registered for canola. With matador, they need to be out feeding.

Spraying late in the evening also protects the bees. I wonder how much damage was done to the bees due to the last two years of flea beetles, cut worms and grasshoppers. My only beef with the bee keepers is to give notice where they are setting up ahead of time so we can plan our spray days. It might be another tough year for bee population survival and doesnt help with all the grasshoppers and cutworms.
