Has anybody tried the max life harrow tines from Bourgault Tillage Tools?
I am looking at replacing the harrow tines on my Salford RTS vertical tillage tool and some sort of carbide tine seems like a good idea. MAX LIFEā¢ harrow tines have tungsten carbide infused onto the tip and last up to 6X longer than regular harrow tines. www.tillagetools.ca

Neighbor has them, not sure if it is the same brand but have the carbide tip in them. They wear much better according to him and he did them last spring if I recall right. 4000ac farmer.

I haven't run these tines or any other long wear ones, but here is my take on them. Often once a regular tine is worn down it becomes fatigued and more prone to breakage up near the coil. So suppose these last 3 times as long as a normal tine? Do they start to suffer a higher than normal rate of breakage later in their life? The answer to that I don't know but they have been around long enough now that someone might be able to give an honest response soon.
The other thing that concerns me is straw flow and field finish off a rough tine instead of a smooth one. I've been told straw doesn't flow as good off the carbide tipped ones and curved tines sure were a dud. Guaranteed the mfr will say they are the best thing ever, but paying double the price for something that gives double the life with a bunch of unknowns is not a deal in my mind, unless you really really hate changing harrow teeth...ha ha
EDIT: I see you said 6X life which is a long time, that is a long time for sure. What is the price spread?

EDIT: I see you said 6X life which is a long time, that is a long time for sure. What is the price spread? I was quoted $40.06 for a standard tine from Salford and $46.60 for a Bourgault Max Life tine from an independent parts store. The cheapest replacement harrow tine I found was from Shoup in the USA at $19.95 USD which is about $25.70 CDN.
I had not thought about the straw not flowing around the rough carbide. I don't think that shoud be a problem with the Salford as the coulter blades should have sized the straw ahead of the harrows
