Looking for good/best way to transport a 30' Macdon swather an 8 hour drive. That is an 8 hour drive by vehicle, not by swather. I have a swather mover, but that distance doesn't seem very sensible or safe to me. Guy I'm buying from doesn't think he can load the header on a trailer with the tractor he has. What height of flat deck trailer would the swather be able to unhook the header onto? I have an equipment hauling company that is willing to haul it, just wondering about loading the header on the trailer.

This may be a thought, if this farmer is not too far away from a decently equipped dealership that can handle the swather header and swather such as a loading ramp if required or other large lifting devices ( loader or large fork lift with forks ) it may make life easier for everyone to farm out the loading persay. We've done that with an air drill for example, had a local company tow it to the JD dealer and there they had everything at their disposal plus the trucking company that delivers combines to the dealer is the one who had his backhaul in front of him to head all the way from northern Alberta back to southern Manitoba in that instance. Can one ever get into difficulty and wreck things by trying to lift too large a header with a single farm tractor, they don't have the lifting ability. I've not lifted a McDon header by an end to know how that goes but if its possible ( balance and strength wise for hooking points ) , getting that second tractor from a neighbour to help and dropping the header off the swather where the two tractors only have to lift the header and the flat deck trailer is backed under it and set down. Not sure what to say about the swather tractor portion, years back had a truck with a picker deliver a swather and literally picked up the whole swather header and all and set it on his trailer deck !

excellent advise northern farmer, i would do the same thing. You would have access to a decent fork lift and other loading equipment at hand. I have tried in 2004 loading a Macdon header with my tv140 loader on a flat deck and I blew out the cylinder seals. I got it on the deck but had made extra work for myself. Now I take everything to the local dealer to load for me. It is usually the truck driver that will say it will lift the header no problem, of course they dont care what happens to your equipment.
Cover the tractor part of the swather to avoid rocks on the front glass window.

The farmer did check with his local dealer and they didn't have anything for loading the header. I should check a few more dealerships. I have a window cover to protect the cab. I'm guessing most equipment haulers would too. This unit has gauge wheels but not the transport system.

That's about twice as far as I've ever moved one. Used one of those full carry movers for a 25' and a 30'. It can get a little interesting when traffic picks up - lots of idiots on the road 🙄. There used to be at least a couple guys that had a transport that you could use the swather to load and unload the header and would also carry the tractor unit. Not sure how you'd find those guys 🤔.

I just hired equipment hauler with drop deck. It was a jd with honeybee header and header had transport setup on it so removed header and pulled it on. Then drove tractor on and away he went. Worked slick.
