Had one of those "dang, this is inconvenient" events today. Filling the pull type sprayer today with water to get ready for next opportunity for spraying and decide to power up the Outback S3 - and it doesn't. Green light comes on for 5 seconds or so, no panel activity, and green light goes out. Self protect shutdown.
Go looking online for a S3 as I don't have a second unit to rob and come across a kijiji ad for repairs by ChdP Ventures Ph 306 231 7673, about 2 miles outside Muenster, sk (near Humboldt). Call him up, tell Chris the scenario, he says yes, likely backlighting inverter is fried. Has parts, bring it there and go for a coffee and it will be ready when you come back. No point second guessing any of this, jump in the vehicle and there in less than 2 hours. Chris is working on equipment in yard so stops what he's doing, takes S3 in house and 15 minutes and $290 later I have a working unit. He says 3 things fails on S3: the touch screen (which he can do) the inverter and a relay. And he changed the problem relay while apart.
Asked him how much longer he will be doing this and says he has only been into it for a year and has lots of work so plans to get more into it. He works on Outback, Trimble and doing some Raven work which is looking like something that he will get into more too.
Really made my day anyway. From a pretty crappy scenario to everything fixed and ready to go in 5 hours.

That'd be Christian Herrnboeck? Used to be part some pretty inciteful discussions on the old forum. I've got a trimble 500 I should probably send his way to get fixed sometime.

There is a guy from our community that works on electronic stuff. He had to order a new one in (took about 2 weeks), but he replaced the screen on the agleader monitor in our sprayer. He started with regular computers but is now getting into helping guys out with equipment computers as well. Very nice to have someone like that close by!

I was wondering if it was the same Chris after I got home. Now that you mention it, that explains the two Massey 4wd tractors in the yard as Chris posted about those in the past. Wish I pieced it together sooner. I read lots of his posts over the years but didn't recall him talking about doing any electronic repairs in the past. He says he is thinking of building a shop to work more on this stuff and has enough work for a second guy already.
One interesting comment of his was this electric stuff does not actually go obsolete as quickly as people think. The inverter he replaced is the same basic unit used for decades, just revised and made more efficient over time. So he has a place he orders bulk quantities from. Makes me feel better because I was afraid of running "non serviceable" stuff as time goes by. Looks like that may not be true.

That’s what I found out last year when I sent a Trimble 500 to that place in Iowa. Dealers said they couldn’t be fixed as its all obsolete, they lied, a few hundred bucks and it was done and upgraded a bit. Anyone who knows much about electronics can save a bundle and usually get any parts they need dirt cheap. Me on the other hand......

Wow.
Thanks for the great review.
I happened on your post through agoogle search, and here's TheCombineForum the way it used to be before it went commercial. LOL.
Yes, I'm one and the same.
No such thing as obsolete when it comes to electronics.
Repair Outback Trimble Deere, Autofarm, CNH, Raven, and a bunch of others. stock all the common parts. In season, can fix while you wait.
Everything is priced reasonably.... I.E. a brand new screen and LCD that'll never bubble (because it doesn't have glue in it) for a 2630 is $1250.
A touch screen for an S3 is $440.
Also have panels and batteries here for all the topcon stuff. X20s, X30s, X35s and can swap them out in a half hour or less.

Nice. I have a Trimble/New Holland screen that doesn’t power up. I think it’s a 500.

Or I can send you a screen for $220 if you want to do it yourself.

How about the Raven control nodes I think they are called? We have on acting up on our 7660 SpraCoup that once in awhile just quits, have to unhook it and hook it back up and it’s good again, sometimes for days, or sometimes a couple hours. Dealer just wants to keep putting in new parts, which I don’t agree with as some of the parts are 3-4000 bucks. I can get a picture and some numbers later.

If it's intermittent sounds like it needs to go back into a reflow oven.
