Statistics Canada keeps hassling me in the middle of seeding nonetheless about completing some spring crop survey. They say it is mandatory. Not only am I annoyed that they have no sensibilities as to the time of year but I am not in a very cooperative mood with the federal government these days. Is there any way for me to tell these bureaucrats I'm not interested?

Tell them if they don’t send it by registered mail you don’t legally have to do it. I got put on the refuse to answer list and haven’t been phoned by stats Canada for over 10 years.

I only answer their phone call survey and when I do, it's my same answer as the year before. 1/3 barley, 1/3 peas, 1/3 yellow mustard. Even though I have no peas in this year but have wheat and flax in, my survey answer is the same year after year after year.
I don't mind answering their survey to keep them from calling again. No one said you have to give them correct answers.
No, it's not mandatory to answer. And neither is it mandatory to provide real answers.

I usually tell them the boss has left for the day and give them a 555 number or if I am in the shop I leave the phone off the hook by the air compressor. Works every time. There calls serve me little purpose or advantage.

They haven’t called me for a few years. I did get a letter last fall I believe. Wanted me to answer online survey. I finally got to it and just kept skipping to next page without answering any questions. Seems to have worked. Didn’t receive any more letters after that.

Tell them when our over-paid government starts answering questions in question period you will consider answering their questions, then hang up.
The "it's mandatory" thing is an empty threat...

whatever about laws on doing the survey their is no law saying you must answer the phone ! With the amount of scam calls you get nowadays you can’t believe who is on the other end. That’s why it’s not mandatory to do over the phone. If they still say it is ask them to find the law that says you have to answer stats can over the phone. I get transferred to a couple different higher ups before they finally gave up and put me on the will not answer list. I was bored one day and tired of them phoning and leaving a message twice a day or more.

I told them I would contact my MLA if they didn't quit hassling me. That was quite a few years ago.

I used to get quite a bit of enjoyment from including a gopher count under the livestock section. Some days it doesn't take much to amuse me.

There is no law requiring you to answer them, have had that argument a couple times with them, when I told them to mail me a lawyer’s copy stating that it’s law, they won’t do it. I’ve been put on the won’t answer list a couple times and still got a call this year, she again put me on the list. This year she asked why I wouldn’t answer and told her it was only necessary for me to know what I’m doing and that the information they get affects my income, at first she said not to get mad at her but it must have just been the way I came across as I told her I wasn’t mad and I know she’s just doing her job.
Have had some nice callers and some absolute a$$holes, they get dealt with accordingly. Had one really nice lady a few years ago, even though I wouldn’t give her any answers, we must have talked for 15 minutes as she was familiar with my area and we talked about the places she knew, that was a nice change from the usual!
Had one try to tell me that the information they get is kept confidential for 100 years, when I called her a liar and told her that this is released a couple weeks after they are done and it even comes out on the radio, she didn’t believe me, so possibly they don’t have a clue what they are doing, just reading what’s on the screen in front of them.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! Good to know they can't really force a person. With all the abuse we've been getting from our governments I don't want to be rewarding bad behavior.

So it seems to be that time of the year again although I didn't somehow get the memo, Stats Canada has been calling for probably two weeks now and almost every day I would say and it seems completely insane. I never answer, they always leave a message and its a whole variety of people calling from those I can understand clearly to those that are questionable. Most of the time it says STATCAN on the display but have had at least one instance where it said PRIVATE and turned out to be them as they left a message. Weekdays, weekends and all sorts of times of the day. The message is typically about the "2023 harvest" but they don't say more than that and to call them with code number bla bla bla. I must be on "THE LIST" and was wondering if any of yourselves are also getting these tax payer wasting money annoying calls ?
