Never knew the term till this week. All I knew was there was something different about some star screwdrivers. I can't call them Philips because that is not what they are.
I seem to be coming across star heads more often where I find myself digging through various assortments of multibit driver kits for the right bit. And I was noticing the assortments from Canadian Tire would have a P1, P2 or P3 on the bit holder in the kit. Now I know what that is and why only they work on certain star heads.

Why would they take one of the poorest screwdriver patterns and make variants of it???

Up till now that was my basic thinking. Turns out I was not actually working with a Phillips head design. I suspect trying to remove JIS with Phillips is one more thing that leads a guy to say the Phillips is bad.
I ordered a few sets of screwdrivers and some bits out of the US now so I have them in the future. Can't remember what I was taking apart last year but had to use the 1/4" impact with a P2 bit to remove some fasteners that were that tight. Broke the few JIS bits I had including some Mastercraft and a Bluepoint. I did get the stuff apart with probably my last bit on the farm. But no other head design was working, only the JIS would fit properly. But the lesson there is that the tip did engage the screw head so well that the impact was breaking the bit. Yes, Mastercraft is not top tier stuff, but more importantly is to know how well the proper bit will engage this star design. I got through a few decades without the proper JIS drivers but figured now is as good as time as any to get the right tool for the future job.

To update this - these JIS screwdrivers are really nice to work with. Can't remember brand, not too many on the net, ones I have are aqua greenish color handles.
I suspect a lot of cursing from Philips originates from using a Philips on a JIS head. And I don't have cheap Philips either. Have some Mac drivers, blue point bits, craftsman drivers, snap on drivers - they all seem to work about the same. Even the Canadian tire ones are not that bad. If you are using a Philips on a JIS then I don't think it matters what brand screwdriver is in your hand.
Wish I knew this 25 years ago, I would have bought JIS the day after learning about it.
