How would all of you rate your internet? My wife and I can’t get onto the internet on our computer now for a few days, we just tether it to our phones, and for the most part it works fine, except when we reach our data limit, then it slows it down so much that the computer won’t work but the phones still do, just fairly slow and can’t watch videos. I’m trying to figure out if it’s our service or the computer. I did a speed test today on my phone, 7.46 mbps upload, 8.83 mbps download. Now that means nothing to me, do any of you know? I tried to look it up and couldn’t really find a good answer. We switched to Telus about a year ago from Bell. Not sure if that was a good move or not, Bell was getting worse all the time, but I’ve had more dropped calls in a month than I ever did with Bell. Not sure how they keep track of data, but before I usually could make it the month before I ran out of data, but now with more data, I’m always running out, sometimes just after two weeks, maybe I’m using it more, but I have twice the data I had with Bell.
I know many people that have different providers for internet, and none seem completely satisfied, city people don’t realize how good they have it with internet.

I have Telus smarthub and it works well here. About 20 mbs down, 20 up. Fairly happy with it but I've heard lots of horror stories of over subscribed towers and nonexistent customer support. It is Telus after all. Horrid company.
My brother has starlink and it is about 100 down, 10 up. Great latency. Kind of expensive now, soon to be $140 a month.

I’m gonna be the odd guy out and say that the xplornet 4g I have works good. The tower I get it from isn’t overloaded I get anywhere from 20-60 down average high 30s but only 2 up. Latency is really good also.

I have Xplornet which is ok but satellite internet has its problems during snow storms or thunderstorms. Valley fiber has put a line past the farm so will probably hook on to that once there in the area. Xplornet is 89 dollars a month unlimited. Good to competition in the rural areas.

Got my starlink on Friday, absolutely incredible. Never in my life have I had speeds like this, so far it averages 160 down, 15 up, and latency of 50ms. I have had as high as 290 and as low as 30 down and that 30 lasts only for about 15 minutes. I am still waiting on the ethernet adapter to get some true speeds as this is all done over wifi and their router is kinda crappy. So far it has had no problems in the two snow storms and wind. Downloading a gig of data takes about 4-5 minutes compared to two overnight sessions with my old ISP. I have one buddy who is on xplorenet and he has always had grief with it, currently on the starlink waiting list. Another who is with sasktel fusion and his should be shipped Friday, and as Carlos mentioned 20 bucks cheaper. If you can get fiber, go with that, if not get Starlink. I think Elon will crush all these ISP's that have been raping the rural areas forever and a day. My temporary permanent install lol.

Son has Starlink and he's a half mile away. Gonna shoot it over to my place but the signal can't get through the trees. Can't cut a path through the trees until this snow melts down - not fun with the chainsaw if you can't walk, ha.

Sucks they don't provide ethernet ports on the new starlink systems without an adapter. I guess they figure most users are just going to stick with wifi, and they probably aren't wrong. Anything to save a few pennies.

Using Ubiquity gear I've found that the dish antennas really help compared to the flat nanostation antennas. But if there's a forest in the way, probably only taller antenna placement will help.

Agreed Torriem, but there are still alot of things that require a hard wire to be reliable. They do sell the ethernet adapter for 45 bucks, but it won't be ready to ship for 2-3 weeks.

We use ubiquity radios to shoot the internet from my house to my parents, the shop and to our barn. Only had trouble with one when it got water in it after the first winter. Line of sight is key to getting them to work. If it’s a clear line my guy says 30-40km isn’t a problem to shoot it.

Sounds like Starlink might be worth a look. I think I have another year left in my contract with Telus though. Is there data limits? Can a few houses hook up with just one Bill, or would each household pay full price?

Just one house would pay then you can send your signal anywhere you want.

There's a faint signal even through the trees.

There are no data limits as it sits and if they ever do bring in limits it will be well above what telus has IMO.
