A couple weeks ago, I noticed a fairly serious engine oil leak around the front of the engine on our T5 loader tractor. Got it in the shop and found the engine breather filter was covered in ice and frost. The engine breather being plugged pressurized the crank and pushed out a seal! This is our snow clearing tractor, working with snow swirling around the tractor is gonna happen often. The breather is tied into the emission system, so its not just as easy as taking out this filter. Anyone have an idea how to prevent this from happening again?

Best bet is probably to delete the emissions and then remove the filter. My neighbor has the same tractor and uses it for the same task, and has had the same problem several times, although has never pushed out a seal thus far.
One other possibility might be to figure out a way to heat the crank case filter housing to keep ice from forming there.

Do you have any cardboard on the radiator to help keep the engine warmer? I haven’t looked at one of those to see how the hose is routed. You could try wrap it to keep the cold off it and might help keep from freezing.

I was retrieving my tweet and see Meskie beat me to the punch. Its freezing up because its running cold. I dunno why no one covers anything up anymore. See everyones vids and pics on twitter even older tractors nothing on the side screens or rads, cloud of blue over them and slobber running down exhaust, not good, good way to wash out the liners and worse.

I had to leave the tractor running out in the cold for about 4 hours because I didn't have access to power for the block heater. I noticed the leak after that. It was that -30 weather we had a couple weeks ago. Maybe the long idling in extreme cold cause that filter to freeze up?

Yes I’d say that is a very good possibility. The air seems very frosty and wet that last cold spell.

I can certainly see that happening with a cold running engine idling as the moisture is being pumped through and the heat just isn't there within the crank case as well as the engine having such cold air flowing over it from the fan if there is no winter front/tarp in use. Its no different then auger engines that have a squirrely long vent tube out in the air and cools off the moist air within it to below the freezing point and plugs off the vent causing the crank seal to blow.

Yea its funny how like I said no one covers anything up anymore but yep they go on and on about their bloody grain augers LOL Might not look stylish but I think many completely have no understanding of how much difference wrapping a tarp around the front end of a tractor does, everything benefits, hydraulics and more. I have tractors I run summer fuel in all winter with zero issues by doing it. Whats interesting is how like on Twitter, you see the then and now photo posts...old tractor all wrapped up with dad, son today with new one, bare assed naked....what really changed?
