The last couple of years we’ve had some of our knock on shovels crack over winter. We have always just left them on over winter as they are usually wore out and never had an issue like this before. Last winter there were a few newer shovels on that cracked so a waste of money. Then this spring we got a different drill and some of them were cracked, and they are the more expensive carbide 3/4 inch seed openers. Have a feeling that they cracked because of rust buildup as the last guy only did a few hundred acres a year for the last few years, so who knows how long they have been on. Tried to take them off before it snowed by it like they are welded on, so just left them. We’re going to do the shank bushings over the winter so will get them off then. Not sure I’m crazy about Bourgault knock ons, especially with the carbide tips as they don’t come off very often so by the time you need to take them off the rubber button is shot so you need to take the entire assembly apart, usually requiring a cutting torch and chisel to clean up rust. Does bourgault make a bolt on 3/4 inch carbide opener? I can’t find one on their website. The knock ons are handy when they work but suck when they don’t.

I quit using the knock on ones on my vibra tiller years ago. Those were the 11 inch Mackay I used bought thru Peavey Mart. Especially after winters with extreme cold periods, was common to leave more than a few on the ground when you first lifted it in spring, and always lost few more during the first rounds. Given that machine has about 80 shanks on it, it was getting expensive. Went back to bolt on. Don't really use it that much anyway anymore.
Its due to shrinkage from cold that they crack. Have never had one break from rust jacking. But it would work the same.
