When you replace your chain Do you use Macdon endless chain or do you just put a connector link in?

We put 60H chain in and change it every year. Don’t use the cheap 60H either.

I assume we're talking about the chain on the drum itself and not the chain inside the gearcase, correct? I took a piece of 1/8" thick flat stock and with the CNC plasma table cut out a spiral tensioning jig that bolts on outside the chain case. Once the sprocket bolt is tightened down, this jig keeps it from moving. Really saves the chain when reversing. This afternoon when I'm servicing the header I'll see if I can get a picture of it installed. I can also post the dxf CAD file for it if someone wants to make one. The nub that I welded on goes into the slot that the idler bolt rides in and as you rotate the jig, it moves the sprocket farther away, and when it's tightened down the sprocket will not move when you reverse it. I did this on both my CA20 and CA25 adapters. Attachments:

We just let those chains run kinda dry and loose. I think we've broken one over the course of 10 years and multiple headers. Usually throw some gear oil on them once a week or so.
Everyone always complained about the chain case but the shafts bending and auger internals exploding are/were a much larger issue for us.

Now I’m going to throw a spanner in the advise of all here……. 😁 I fitted a flexible pipe to the top cover on this chain drive & simply oil the chain every day. I’ve never had a chain tensioner problem or a chain problem. Most chains last 800-1000 hours. Tension is checked every morning - simply by rocking the drum back & forth. It really only needs adjusting when I take the head off ….. maybe every 100-150 hours. I’ve done this on all 3 MacDons. Even the rice 7.6mt 9 bat …… never had an issue with this area.
Now what I’d really like to see is for someone invent a simple over-centre locking mechanism for the drum height locking bolts & then some sort of quick height adjustment for the feed drum so you can simply flick the over-centre lock, maybe flip another cam type device that lifts the drum up 20mm for direct head canola. Then reverse operation to drop it back down for cereals. Surely someone smarter than me can figure this out in Canada. You blokes seem to have plenty of time in the winter to fiddle with things in your workshops that also seem to have all the “toys” in them to make bits! 😉 Submit your ideas! 😁

One of my headers I had to replace the sprocket, chan and a bearing on the drum. 20000 acres I used the endless chan and bought a new sprocket. Stupid money but I never look at it during harvest. Good for another 20k.
