Pretty sure I have never seen canola as slow as this year and terrible catch with spotty germination and patchy fields. Not just ours, but everyone's. Seen a couple goods fields by one guy here last night when I went for a drive, not sure what he did, but by far has the best looking crop of canola I've seen anywhere. Went for parts this morning about 30 minutes east, and the same thing there, very few fields you can even make out anything let alone rows. We have one field that has just struggled right from the start it seems, sprayed it close to 2 weeks ago now, needs sprayed again soon but the crop has barely advanced from when we last did it so the crop isn't competing at all with the weeds and volunteer oats. Can it safely be sprayed 3 times? I'm running out of patience with this field, haven't ruled out sowing it to something and letting someone cut it for green feed. Already starting to look at the other end of the season and I don't know if many of these canola fields are going to make it unless they really get their ass in gear. The rest of our canola is looking better, but still not where it should be. We have barley in the flag leaf and canola just out of the ground, cereals seem to be thriving but the canola is struggling. Doesn't seem to matter what drill or what variety, so it's just the year I guess. Kind of glad we cut back on our canola acres this year, sure the price is good, but that does very little if you have nothing to sell. How is everyone else canola coming along?

Sounds all too familiar Kevlar. Just can’t seem to get going here. Worst flea beetle pressure we have ever had sure didn’t help.

Canola looks pretty good over here, but a bit patchy in places too. The broadcast canola looks a bit better than the stuff seeded with drills. We thought that the soil conditions were very good this spring, but for some reason any canola that was seeded a bit deep struggled.
Early canola here is just beginning to bolt. But we don't get the heat units you guys do, so we have to be farther ahead at this stage of the game.

Exactly the same in our area too. Some fields look exceptional and others will struggle to get 25 bushels an acre. In our area it was stubble management that was the issue. TOO much straw and the canola froze , and no straw and the canola blew out. We have had decent rains by rosenort but unfortunately you go west of rosenort and there are crops struggling from no rain. Very hit and miss .

I am not much further south than victory and canola here is struggling. I have only seen a handful of fields where the canola is nicely cabbaged out, most fields have plenty of bare spots. Feels like it is 2 weeks behind. Flea beetle pressure was hit and miss here too.

I guess our area is lucky as most canola fields are looking ok but there are some patchy spots and some fields that the canola is cabbaging but there just isn’t many pants so the ground isn’t covered. my friend sent me this of his field when he was crop checking in his plane.

Canola is all over the map here too. Anything put into corn trash or heavy cereal trash got frosted and then the beatles took out the reseeded stand. Fields tilled to black powder watched their top soil and canola seed blow to the Atlantic. Our ground was in between and we have a good stand going. We have seen major differences in vigor between varieties and seed sizes. 4.8g L357p canopied 15in rows last week and has been the fastest/most aggressive field in the whole area that I've seen. 3.8g DeKalb 82SC was a little slow but caught up now but the 4g L255p has been well behind the whole time and just doesn't seem to be able to get going properly. All seeded within 2 days into the same stubble with the same tillage/manure/fertility program.

Hit the reply button, not the quick reply button. It will take you to a new page. All the stuff for posting pictures is there. Just an update to my earlier post, I seen a bolting canola field this morning on my travels. Looked nice and even too.

To elaborate on what Beerwiser said, once you hit the upper right corner "reply" button in the window at the bottom of every thread page that jumps you to a new window with more features, and if its a photo on your computer, you go to the upper right corner of that new window where it says "add attachment" . Click that and it opens up a small window in the center of your screen and you will see where it says "add files ...", click on that and up pops your file explorer within your computer and go searching for the photo and click on your chosen photo. It uploads your photo and once its finished ( a blue bar turns into a green bar to indicate its finished loading ) you click on "insert" and then click the "done" button on the lower right of that small window. I haven't actually posted more than one item at a time so I assume you would click "add files ..." once again then go searching for the next photo and once you are done your photo grouping, hit "done". Hopefully I didn't go and lead you astray too far in the wrong direction. I haven't been inserting URL's from websites with the system provided feature along with others in the heading at the top of that reply window, I just copy and paste a URL into the typing dialog window and it typically works.

My canola looked sickly until I sprayed Liberty and Pounce. The weed pressure was enough to slow growth right down.

I was just thinking, I wonder if the mild winter is the reason that the flea beetles have been so bad this year? It sounds wide spread and all of western Canada had a warm winter.
