The ones in front of your shop got seeded on time! I know what you mean about a whole field; have to do what works. You guys in Manitoba have the luxury of more heat units and can wait longer to seed canola. Yeah fair enough on the heat units thing. Only ever had to re-seed one canola crop ever, it was that year all of Western Canada froze which I think was 2016??? That year I seeded May 5-10 as I recall and neighbor seeded May 20 and his was fine. I've been following the May 20 rule ever since and it has worked perfect, never once sprayed for beetles either. Later crops come with much more vigor and almost catch the early ones anyways.

Ours escaped the frost but it didn't escape the wind. Had some get wrecked by drifting dirt and relentless winds.
Only 30 acres though so it wasn't the end of the world.

Vertical tillage has lead to more soil erosion and reseeding. On the other hand the black fields usually are less affected by frost. I noticed on a zero till oat stubble field if you can seed in between the rows on the black soil my canola survived the frost. Also noticed where a few green wild oat patches the canola survived better than where I had thick straw residue. I am pretty happy with the performance of the elmers super 7 harrows. It Breaks up just enough straw on zero till stubble to prevent frost damage and also leaves enough stubble so the wind damage effect is nil.

Our wind damage came from a neighbors field that was edible beans last year. Edible bean ground blows, just the nature of the beast. One of the many reasons we don't grow them.

I was out yesterday looking at our canola and couldn’t find much frost damage on the plants.
Dad said the last time they had to reseed canola was in mid nineties and that was because it didn’t come up. He could only remember one other year they had to reseed part of a field cause it was dry and didn’t germinate.
